‘He’s Not A Dumb Guy’ — NHL GM Gets Brutally Honest on Former Oilers Star Evander Kane’s Turbulent Career

NHL GM Don Waddell reflects on Evander Kane’s turbulent career, past rumors, Oilers exit, and current role with Canucks amid ongoing speculation.

Evander Kane’s NHL journey has been nothing short of dramatic. From his promising start as an 18-year-old draft pick to navigating off-ice controversies, trades, and injuries, Kane has experienced nearly every high and low a professional hockey player can face.

Now with the Vancouver Canucks, Kane remains a physical force on the ice, but questions about his career trajectory and reputation continue to follow him.

Evander Kane’s Career and the Rumors That Continue to Follow Him

During a recent appearance on the “Cam and Strick Podcast,” Columbus Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations and former Hurricanes GM Don Waddell offered candid insights into Kane’s career path.

“We drafted him as an 18-year-old player, came in right off the bat, had a great start to his career,” Waddell said. “You know, as his career started to go along, maybe choosing the right people to associate with sometimes doesn’t help you. And I think that happened somewhat. Evander’s not a dumb guy; he’s a smart guy. So, you know, I think it took him off the rails a little bit. Then he got back going, and then obviously a little unreal a few years ago, but it looks like he’s back. But always with me, very professional, very good. I’ve seen him throughout the course of my years, always talked to him, I got along great with him.”

Waddell’s primary focus was on a key theme in Kane’s career: Moments of brilliance on the ice overshadowed by turbulence off it. Earlier this year, a false online rumor claimed Kane was involved in a major off-ice incident. While the story was later debunked, it served as another reminder of how controversy often seems to find the veteran forward, even when unfounded.

Multiple sources, including the “2 Mutts Hockey” Podcast, reported a while back that Kane was assaulted in Vancouver on June 28, 2025, allegedly requiring medical attention. “Evander Kane was jumped in Vancouver last night & he needed medical attention. He’s doing fine, which is great to hear,” the outlet tweeted. No official statement was issued by Kane or the Canucks.

Despite the noise surrounding him, Kane’s production and physical presence have rarely dipped below expectations. Over 15 NHL seasons, he has consistently maintained over a 0.50 point-per-game pace. In 2023–24, he delivered 250 hits in 77 games, showcasing his trademark toughness and willingness to play a hard-nosed game.

However, Kane’s tenure with the Edmonton Oilers came to an end when the team traded him for a fourth-round pick. The decision was largely driven by salary cap constraints. The Oilers needed flexibility to retain key players such as defenseman Evan Bouchard and superstar Leon Draisaitl, and Kane’s diminishing role following his return from injury during the 2025 playoffs made the move more practical.

At 33 (To be 34 tomorrow, August 2), Kane now brings his physical edge to his hometown Canucks. Whether he can fully reclaim his earlier dominance remains to be seen, but what’s clear is that Kane’s career, marked by both elite performances and persistent off-ice challenges, continues to draw strong reactions from fans, analysts, and even league executives.
