‘LTIR Scheme Seems Likely’ — NHL Fans React to Major Injury Update on Matthew Tkachuk and Return Timeline

As updates on Matthew Tkachuk's injury come out, NHL fans are quick to point towards another LTIR scheme by the Florida Panthers.

The Florida Panthers continue to be one of the most dominant teams in the league with back-to-back Stanley Cup victories. But while the Panthers under GM Zito have been sensational, they have also come under a lot of fire.

NHL fans have quickly blamed the Panthers for going over the cap space and taking advantage of the LTIR rules. Recent updates on Matthew Tkachuk’s injury and return timeline have riled the fans up once again.

NHL Fans Are in Disbelief Over Matthew Tkachuk’s Injury Timeline

While the Panthers have been one of the most competitive teams in the league, many fans have called them out for going over the cap space. And recent updates by NHL insider David Pagnotta on Tkachuk’s injury have again got the fans in disbelief.

In his tweet, Pagnotta mentioned, “Can confirm Matthew Tkachuk underwent surgery a few weeks ago and will miss the start of the season. The timeline is unclear, but he could be out of action for as long as some time in January.”

Fans were quick to jump in with their takes. As one fan mentioned, “I’ll translate it for you: Tkachuk will be on LTIR until the playoffs.” Fans believe the Panthers have been taking advantage of the LTIR to keep their players fresh for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, another fan mentions, “When does the NHL start its investigation? Or is that just for the Canadian teams?” For some fans, the Panthers have been conveniently dodging the cap space by keeping their star players on LTIR till the playoffs to increase their roster depth.

One other fan mentions, “Just in time for him to be activated off of LTIR for round 1…” To some fans, this is the exact scenario that happened with Tkachuk last season, with him being put on LTIR for the last 25 games in the previous season.

Another fan mentions, “Bro is not playing till the playoffs.” Fans believe that the Panthers will once again use Tkachuk’s injury to shelve him until the playoffs. According to the rules to be put on the LTIR, a player has to miss 10 NHL games and 24 days of play.

With Pagnotta’s current recovery timeline for Tkachuk, he could easily miss up to 3 months of the regular season and 30+ games. This would easily allow the Panthers to put him on the injured list and free up $9.5 million in cap space.

Meanwhile, one fan mentioned, “The LTIR scheme seems likely.” The fans have come to a common consensus regarding the Panthers’ strategy. As one mentioned, “Is he going to play in the Olympics and then go on LTIR until game one of the playoffs again?”

They pointed out that even last year, Tkachuk played at the 4 Nations face-off and then remained on the shelf until the playoffs started in April. While the exact timeline of Tkachuk’s return has yet to be confirmed, fans across the league remain skeptical of this news.
