‘That’s a Real Thing’ — NHL Exec Lends Credence to Rangers’ Interest in Swinging Brady Tkachuk Trade

Just a week after another early playoff exit, the Ottawa Senators find themselves back under the microscope, and so does their captain. Brady Tkachuk, long seen as the heart of the franchise, is once again being pulled into trade speculation following Ottawa’s first-round sweep by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Now, fresh buzz around a potential move, particularly involving the New York Rangers, is adding even more intrigue to an already pivotal offseason.

Brady Tkachuk to NY Rangers Talk Grows

After Ottawa’s 4-0 series exit, questions have once again been raised about whether this core group can truly contend. As expected, much of that conversation has centered on Tkachuk, especially after he finished the series without a point and posted a minus-4 rating.

Despite the outside noise, Tkachuk made his position clear. “I’ve been fully committed to this team, this city,” he said, emphasizing his desire to remain in Ottawa.

Still, the rumors haven’t gone away. If anything, they’ve picked up steam, with the New York Rangers now mentioned as a potential landing spot.

The connection isn’t new. The Rangers have been interested in Tkachuk dating back to his 2018 draft year, when they were unable to select him at No. 9.

Now led by team president and GM Chris Drury, New York has prioritized building a tougher, harder-to-play-against roster, something Tkachuk represents perfectly. The organization has quietly kept tabs on him for years, and if he ever becomes available, there’s a strong belief they would make a serious push. “I think that’s a real thing,” one Eastern Conference executive told The Athletic.

Of course, any potential deal would be complicated. Tkachuk still has two years remaining on his seven-year, $57.5 million contract and holds a no-trade clause, giving him significant control over his future.

Still, as one executive noted, a determined team can make anything happen: “You can always pull it off if you overpay.”

The Rangers, coming off a disappointing finish at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, are expected to explore major changes, and Tkachuk could be a centerpiece if they choose to go big.

Meanwhile, Senators GM Steve Staios tried to quiet the speculation during locker room cleanout day. “This comes up often. There’s nothing that we have talked about or thought about where that conversation should happen,” he said.

Still, his comments haven’t exactly put the rumors to rest. As Ottawa heads into a critical offseason, questions about the team’s direction linger. And whether it’s fair or not, much of the attention continues to fall on their captain.
