When Jason Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Dallas Stars to avoid salary arbitration, it appeared that one of the biggest stories of the offseason had finally come to an end.
The agreement gave Dallas another year with one of the league’s most productive scorers while preserving the team’s hopes of making a run at the Stanley Cup. However, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta, the contract may have simply kicked the can down the road.
Jason Robertson’s Future Still Uncertain
Long before the two sides reached an agreement, reports surfaced that Dallas was exploring the trade market.
General manager Jim Nill was reportedly close to completing a sign-and-trade deal with the Seattle Kraken during the NHL Draft. The proposed agreement would have given Robertson an eight-year contract worth $120 million while sending significant assets back to Dallas, including the seventh overall pick.
However, Robertson declined to commit to the Kraken, sending Dallas back to the negotiating table.
The two sides eventually agreed to a one-year deal after failing to bridge the gap between Robertson’s reported $14 million asking price and the Stars’ $12 million ceiling. Dallas also had to trade Mavrik Bourque to create additional cap space, adding another layer of tension to the negotiations.
Pagnotta addressed the situation and indicated that the relationship may still need time to heal. “I don’t think it’s calm waters just yet; [the extension] has calmed the waters, but… there are still some ripples that are affecting, I think, the relationship,” Pagnotta said.
The timing of the contract also adds another layer of intrigue.
Because Robertson signed only a one-year deal, the Stars will be eligible to begin extension talks again on January 1, 2027. By the following summer, Tyler Seguin’s $9.85 million cap hit will come off the books, giving Dallas considerably more financial flexibility.
That could allow Nill to offer Robertson the type of long-term contract he was reportedly seeking all along.
Still, the Stars are facing a delicate situation. If negotiations once again stall, Robertson will have significant leverage as he approaches unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2027.
Following the agreement, Robertson acknowledged the salary cap challenges facing the organization. “Everyone can see that they are in a little (salary cap) crunch. At the end of the day, they had my rights, right? I wasn’t free to go anywhere this year, so the chances of staying in Dallas this offseason were high, obviously, because of that. It just happened in this way, and we’ll have time to revisit it later this year,” Robertson said.
For now, Dallas still has one of the NHL’s elite scorers in its lineup. But despite the new contract, it appears the story of Jason Robertson and the Stars is far from over.
