‘They Marginalized Him’ — Canadiens Legend Accuses Maple Leafs of Hanging Mitch Marner Out to Dry

Mitch Marner’s redemption arc has quickly become one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. After years of carrying the weight of criticism in Toronto, Marner is now thriving with the Vegas Golden Knights and playing arguably the best hockey of his career.

At the same time, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ complete collapse without him has reignited major debate about how the organization handled one of its former franchise stars. Now, a former Montreal Canadiens legend is openly defending Marner while criticizing the environment he left behind in Toronto.

Canadiens Icon Blasts Toronto Maple Leafs’ Handling of Mitch Marner

Mitch Marner’s dominant playoff run with the Vegas Golden Knights has completely changed the narrative around his legacy after years of taking blame for Toronto’s playoff failures.

Through 15 postseason games under John Tortorella, Marner leads the NHL with 21 points and a +13 rating, helping Vegas take a 3-0 lead over the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final. The Leafs, meanwhile, are watching from home after missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Former Canadiens enforcer Chris Nilan believes Marner unfairly became the scapegoat for Toronto’s bigger organizational issues.

Nilan said he was genuinely happy to see Marner succeed because, in his view, the winger was unfairly blamed. “We saw this year what happened with Auston Matthews. Not too easy without Mitch Marner,” Nilan said. “I remember Mitch Marner in the playoffs with them going down, blocking shots, blocked another shot, you know, doing things that a lot of offensive players at times don’t do.”

He compared Marner’s mentality to players like Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovský, and Cole Caufield, saying those are the kinds of details winning players must commit to in postseason hockey.

“I couldn’t be happier for that kid. Like, they freaking marginalized him, hung him out to dry,” Nilan added.

For years, one of the biggest narratives surrounding Marner in Toronto was that his skill-based style supposedly did not translate well to playoff hockey. Vegas has completely flipped that narrative.

Under Tortorella, Marner has flourished in an aggressive transition system that allows him to play freely and confidently rather than constantly carrying the emotional weight of Toronto’s intense spotlight.

His highlight-reel, between-the-legs goal against the Anaheim Ducks earlier in the playoffs became one of the defining moments of the postseason and symbolized the level of confidence he is currently playing with.

While John Chayka and Mats Sundin continue trying to rebuild Toronto’s roster around Auston Matthews, Marner is now just five wins away from lifting the Stanley Cup in Vegas.
