‘Not Good Enough’ — Canadiens Star Cole Caufield Catches Heat After Going Missing in Game 1 Vs. Sabres

The Montreal Canadiens opened their second-round series with a 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night in a game that exposed early issues in their top-line production as Buffalo dictated tempo with quick transitions and strong puck pressure.

Montreal struggled to match that pace, and the deficit built early became too much to recover from as the game moved on.

Even when the Canadiens pushed back, their top offensive group could not sustain pressure at even strength, and that shift quickly placed Cole Caufield under focus after a quiet night. Despite leading the team in shots during the regular season, he failed to create scoring options in dangerous areas when the game tightened.

Canadiens’ Top Line Struggles in Game 1 Put Cole Caufield in the Spotlight

On Wednesday, the focus was on Montreal’s top unit after the final horn, with Cole Caufield becoming the central talking point because of his limited impact. The Canadiens dropped the game 4-2 to Buffalo, and Caufield’s lack of production, especially on 5-on-5, stood out in a matchup where space quickly disappeared for Montreal’s forwards.

Caufield came into the series after a 51-goal regular season, but his postseason rhythm has not fully followed that pace. He scored once in the opening round against Tampa Bay and has started this series without finding consistency at even strength, which raises questions about how the top line is functioning under playoff pressure.

The combination of Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky struggled to break through Buffalo’s structure, even as Suzuki briefly sparked life with a power-play goal in Game 1. Outside of special teams, Montreal rarely sustained zone time, and repeated defensive pressure forced them into long stretches without clean entries or set offensive looks.

Reactions after the game quickly reflected that frustration, with some analysts and voices around the league pointing to the lack of even-strength output as a growing concern for Montreal’s top scorers.

A Reddit hockey account reacting on X wrote, “In many ways, the Habs are lucky they got past the 1st round with Caufield contributing so little. It’s gonna be a tall task to get past the 2nd round if Caufield doesn’t wake up soon.”

Former NHL goaltender José Théodore, speaking on Sportsnet 590 The FAN, viewed it through a different lens, saying, “When Caufield gets on his game, he’s a mini Ovechkin… He’s paying the price because he’s smaller, but if you wake him up, he can go on a tear.”

NHL analyst Drew Livingstone also added pressure through his post on X, writing, “Caufield at even-strength these playoffs: 0 GOALS, O ASSISTS, 9 SHOTS. Not good enough from the 50-goal scorer.”

NHL writer Heikki Mannonen also highlighted the broader debate, posting, “Nick Suzuki breaks the 100-point barrier in the regular season The Captain broke the 100-point mark in the regular season. Montreal expects big things from him this spring. Caufield and Juraj Slafkovský even strength 0+0. That’s not enough. Is the core really good enough after all?”
