‘I Don’t Think That’s Happening’ — Connor McDavid Not Forcing an Exit But Oilers Serving Reality Checks, per Insider

The Edmonton Oilers’ facade of inevitability shattered against an unlikely Anaheim Ducks squad, turning what should have been a championship march into a shocking first-round autopsy. The defeat brought several long-standing concerns into sharper focus, including unstable defensive coverage, unreliable goaltending, and a roster that leaned too heavily on elite offensive production.

Connor McDavid’s decision to sign a short-term extension in 2025 was viewed as an effort to keep Edmonton’s championship window open, but the early exit has led to fresh questions about the franchise’s direction.

Although one NHL insider made it clear McDavid is not trying to force his way out, the organization is now facing difficult conversations about how this roster is constructed.

Elliotte Friedman Says Oilers Facing Hard Truths Around Connor McDavid Era

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman addressed the growing speculation during a recent appearance on NHL Network, where he pushed back on the idea that McDavid is seeking a trade out of Edmonton. At the same time, Friedman explained that the organization is now taking a deeper look at why a season filled with championship expectations unraveled so quickly.

“I am still trying to get a handle on everything that is going to happen there,” Friedman said. “I do not think McDavid is asking for a trade or anything like that. I do not think that is happening.” Even so, Friedman made it clear that major evaluations are already taking place behind the scenes.

According to Friedman, Edmonton’s leadership is examining both roster construction and the team’s overall style of play after another frustrating postseason ending.

“I do think they are making some hard evaluations about where they are, why this year went wrong, and how they can fill in their roster or change their roster,” he explained. He also pointed toward larger structural problems, especially with transition defense and the heavy burden placed on the team’s duopoly of stars.

“Their rush defense all regular season was bad, and against the Ducks, it was bad,” Friedman added. “Do they have to change the way they play?”

He also questioned whether Edmonton needs to ease the workload carried by McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as the core continues to age and the physical demands increase.

These comments followed Edmonton’s 5-2 loss to Anaheim in Game 6 on April 30, a defeat that ended the Oilers’ season in the opening round. After the elimination, McDavid openly admitted the team never found consistency during the year.

“That was tough,” he said. “We were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, you’re going to be disappointed.”

The disappointing finish has naturally fueled speculation connecting McDavid to other franchises, though no indication has emerged that he wants out.

General manager Stan Bowman has continued to stress that Edmonton remains focused entirely on competing for a championship right away. “All the moves that we make are geared towards trying to win the cup next year,” Bowman said, reinforcing that the organization still believes its window remains open despite growing outside pressure.
