Now that the 2025 NHL Draft has arrived, all eyes are tuned to the next wave of talent looking to make their mark at hockey’s highest level.
Multiple elite prospects are expected to be selected in the opening round, including names like Matthew Schaefer, Porter Martone, Anton Frondell, Roger McQueen, and Jack O’Brien.
Another name expected to become a household favorite is Michael Misa, who has consistently ranked among the top prospects and is projected to be selected within the first few picks.
Michael Misa vs. Patrick Kane: A Statistical Comparison
Misa has played the last three seasons with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL, where his offensive talents have been on full display.
He has played 177 career regular-season games in the OHL and has scored 113 goals with 152 assists for 265 total points, making him the Spirit’s all-time leading scorer. This production has NHL teams everywhere intrigued about his potential at the next level.
Misa’s development has been remarkable across his three OHL seasons. After being granted exceptional status, he tallied 56 points in 45 games during his rookie 2022-23 season, followed by 75 points in 67 games in 2023-24. His breakout 2024-25 campaign saw him explode for 134 points in 65 games, leading the entire Canadian Hockey League in both goals (62) and points.
Meanwhile, Kane spent one season with the OHL’s London Knights in 2006-07 and delivered a legendary performance, scoring 62 goals with 83 assists for 145 points in 58 games. He also previously played with the United States National Development Under-17 and Under-18 teams, recording a combined 32 goals with 38 assists in 63 games.
Kane’s single OHL season remains one of the most dominant by a draft-eligible player, earning him the Emms Family Award as OHL Rookie of the Year and positioning him as the eventual first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft.
NHL Legacy and Future Potential
Kane has enjoyed a Hall of Fame career, spent primarily with the Chicago Blackhawks. He helped lead the club to three Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015, including scoring the Stanley Cup-winning goal against the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime of Game 6 in 2010.
After his legendary tenure in Chicago, Kane had a brief stint with the New York Rangers before joining the Detroit Red Wings in December 2023. While he’s approaching unrestricted free agency, he’s likely to return to the Red Wings for at least one more season.
Misa admitted to having motivation from his World Junior snub when he wasn’t selected by Team Canada for the recent World Junior Championship.
“Disappointing I wasn’t able to help them out or even get an invite to try and prove myself,” he said. “Just shifted my mind back to Saginaw and try and help them win, but definitely it was like a little chip on my shoulder.”
Draft Projections and Outlook
Misa will likely find out his NHL destination within the first few picks of the NHL Draft. Once considered the presumptive first overall pick, he now appears likely to be selected second overall by the San Jose Sharks, with defenseman Matthew Schaefer projected to go first to the New York Islanders.
The statistical comparison shows both players dominated their respective junior seasons, with Misa’s three-year body of work demonstrating sustained excellence and development, while Kane’s single explosive season showcased immediate elite-level production that translated seamlessly to NHL stardom.
