The idea of adding Patrik Laine to the Edmonton Oilers has generated plenty of discussion this offseason. On paper, the fit is easy to understand. A former 44-goal scorer lining up alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl is the kind of scenario that immediately grabs attention.
But while the possibility sounds exciting, Oilers fans aren’t convinced.
Patrik Laine Rumor Fails to Excite Oilers Fans
Laine remains unsigned after an injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign in which he appeared in just five games before undergoing core muscle surgery. Because of his injury history, some observers have suggested that Edmonton could pursue him on a low-cost, incentive-heavy contract.
The Bleed Oil Blue channel posed the question directly to fans: “Would you take a flyer on Patrik Laine? A cheap, one-year deal with performance bonuses. If he’s healthy, the guy can still score goals. Worth the gamble for the Oilers?”
Edmonton could potentially sign him to a base cap hit between $850,000 and $1.5 million, with the remaining compensation tied to games played and goal thresholds. If he gets hurt or fails to fit in Edmonton’s scheme, the financial consequences would be minimal.
Still, many fans were quick to reject the idea.
Den Polland saw some upside in the move but questioned whether Laine would be comfortable playing for head coach Mike Babcock. “If Laine would take a 1-year, cheap, bonus-rich contract, I 100% give him a chance. One of the best shots in the league. Proven he can score in this league. No chance Laine plays for Babcock though, right?”
Others were even more hesitant. Raffaele Papaianni suggested a professional try-out contract instead. “How about a PTO?”
Another fan offered perhaps the harshest assessment. “It’s not a fit at all. Laine won’t get the playing time he needs to be useful. Also, Babcock would hate how mentally weak he is. It’s not even up for discussion of how bad this would be for the player and the Oilers. It’s a hard pass.”
BJones also questioned whether Laine would fit within the culture of the team. “Nope, you can’t bring selfish players in!”
The concerns are understandable. Laine has played just 75 games over the past three seasons, and Edmonton’s focus remains firmly fixed on winning the Stanley Cup. The Oilers need reliable players who can contribute consistently rather than someone whose availability remains a question mark.

Is the Risk Worth Taking?
The answer might be yes, but only under the right circumstances.
If general manager Stan Bowman cannot land another proven scoring winger, a one-year contract loaded with performance bonuses could represent a worthwhile gamble.
Still, Oilers fans have every reason to be cautious. For a team with championship aspirations, depending on Laine to solve problems in the top six could prove to be a very risky strategy.
