The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in surprisingly similar and disappointing positions late in the 2025-26 season.
Both teams are near the bottom of the Atlantic Division and are likely to miss the playoffs. Yet even in a tough year, one key difference has stood out: the mentality of Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk.
Why Matthew Tkachuk’s Mindset Is What the Toronto Maple Leafs Need
As the season winds down, Tkachuk addressed the danger of “mailing it in” during the final weeks of a lost campaign. Instead of focusing solely on standings, he emphasized protecting the franchise’s long-term identity and culture.
Tkachuk said, “If we lose the culture, we’re absolutely screwed. If we take the foot off the gas, then it shows them (the new guys) that’s okay, and that’s not okay. So if we lose the culture we’re screwed and we’re not going to do that.”

Despite the Panthers going 5-6-0 in their last 11 games, the message has remained consistent. Florida has battled adversity all season. Tkachuk himself missed multiple months early in the year, while captain Aleksander Barkov is expected to miss the entire regular season after suffering a knee injury during training camp.
Florida has also dealt with a long list of injuries, including Brad Marchand, Sam Reinhart, Seth Jones, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, Uvis Balinskis, Niko Mikkola, Jonah Gadjovich, Cole Schwindt, Dmitry Kulikov, and Tomas Nosek. Most recently, Evan Rodrigues’ season is likely over after a broken finger.
Despite the setbacks, Florida’s approach hasn’t shifted toward deliberately tanking for draft position, with maintaining culture remaining the priority.
The comparisons to the Toronto Maple Leafs have only intensified, as the team has faced criticism for perceived softness and a lack of accountability during its slump, especially following Auston Matthews’ injury earlier this month.
The moment came when Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks delivered a heavy hit on Matthews, but no Maple Leafs player immediately stepped in, drawing attention to the team’s lack of response in defending their captain.

That’s why the “Tkachuk mentality” is something the Maple Leafs could really use. Even with the Florida Panthers near the bottom of the standings, Tkachuk continues pushing to preserve the winning culture that helped lead the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories.
In contrast, Toronto has yet to establish that same refuse-to-lose identity. Whether the Maple Leafs can develop that mindset moving forward may be one of the biggest questions heading into the offseason.
