New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer continues to turn heads as his remarkable rookie season rolls on. The Islanders are enjoying a strong year, sitting second in the Metropolitan Division with a 27-17-5 record. And they’ve won two of their last three games.
Coming off a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, the spotlight once again landed on the 18-year-old blueliner who is rapidly approaching a historic milestone.
Matthew Schaefer Poised to Etch His Name in Islanders History
Selected first overall by the Islanders in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, Schaefer delivered another impressive performance against Vancouver, picking up two assists. It marked his seventh multi-point game of the season. He tied Ryan Pulock for the fifth-most multi-point by a rookie defenseman in franchise history. He also recorded two assists in Saturday’s game against Calgary.
With 34 points in 49 games, Schaefer has matched Tim Connolly’s long-standing record for the most points by an 18-year-old in a single season in Islanders history, a mark that dates back to 1999–2000. One more point would see him stand alone, all but cementing his place in the franchise’s record books in 2026.
His impact isn’t just noticeable within the organization, either. Across the NHL, Schaefer leads all rookies in shots on goal with 124 and sits third among first-year players in points, goals, and assists.
Islanders Outlast Canucks in Tight Contest
Monday’s win over Vancouver had a few tense moments, including an early heavy hit from Evander Kane on Matthew Schaefer, but the rookie stayed in the game without missing a shift.
Max Sasson opened the scoring at 2:49 of the first to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead. The Islanders answered at 10:11 when Anthony Duclair tied it 1-1 on a wrist shot after a strong setup from Tony DeAngelo. Kane restored the Canucks’ lead at 14:48 with a tipped point shot to make it 2-1. Matthew Schaefer appeared to tie the game late in the period. But his goal was overturned following an offside challenge.
Duclair tied the game again on the power play at 14:34 of the second. Then Ryan Pulock put the Islanders ahead at 15:58. DeAngelo added an insurance goal at 10:15 of the third to make it 4-2. Vancouver pulled within one at 18:09 on a Drew O’Connor deflection with the extra attacker. But New York held on for the win.
