Maple Leafs’ $60 Million D-Man Grapples With Potential Curtain Call in Toronto’s Final Home Game

The Toronto Maple Leafs head into their final home game of a disappointing 2025–26 season with uncertainty surrounding one of their biggest contracts. A veteran defenseman has emerged as a central storyline amid speculation that his time in Toronto may be coming to an end.

Leafs D-Man Morgan Rielly Sparks Farewell Buzz

Rielly still has four years remaining on his $60 million contract, which carries an average annual hit of $7.5 million. However, his future has become less certain amid performance concerns and organizational changes.

Following the firing of GM Brad Treliving, the incoming management is expected to prioritize “evidence-based” roster changes. Rielly, who has struggled defensively this season with a -17 rating, is a prime candidate for a change-of-scenery move.

With the Maple Leafs missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016, the organization appears headed towards a retool, making every roster decision significant.

Toronto has two games left in the regular season, hosting the Dallas Stars before finishing on the road against the Ottawa Senators. That timing only adds to the sense that Monday’s contest could carry emotional weight.

Rielly spoke candidly about what playing in Toronto has meant to him, calling it, “An outstanding place to play and a great place to live. This organization means a lot to a lot of people and so to be a part of it, it’s an honor and I don’t believe that that’s lost on anyone in here.”

When asked whether the uncertainty surrounding his future has him considering the possibility of this being his last home game, Rielly said, “It’s crossed my mind before. All athletes you know have that at some point. They think about that, and tonight’s no different than that.”

Rielly holds a full no-movement clause through the 2027-28 season, giving him significant control over his future. While he has indicated he has no intention of leaving Toronto, he also acknowledged that players must be prepared for any conversation, including the possibility of waiving the clause if management pursues major changes.

Head coach Craig Berube highlighted Rielly’s deep connection to the franchise, saying, “He’s been here a long time and he loves it here. I don’t think he can think about being anywhere else, personally.”

For now, all attention is on the final home game, but the offseason decisions are already casting a shadow. Whether this ends up being a genuine goodbye or just another step in Rielly’s long run with the Toronto Maple Leafs remains to be seen.
