The Toronto Maple Leafs endured a disappointing season that fell well short of expectations, missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade.
The fallout has already begun, with the organization parting ways with general manager Brad Treliving and signaling more changes could follow this offseason. Now, captain Auston Matthews appears to have placed the responsibility for his future squarely in the hands of ownership.
Auston Matthews’ Stance on His Future in Toronto
Matthews is currently recovering from a season-ending injury after suffering a Grade 3 MCL tear in a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks. The star center underwent surgery and is expected to require around 12 weeks of recovery, with a return projected for next season.
His injury capped a frustrating year in which Matthews recorded 53 points in 60 games, below his usual production, and found himself at the center of trade speculation around the March deadline. With Toronto now entering a potentially transformative offseason, those rumors have resurfaced.
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, Matthews has not indicated any desire to leave the franchise. “I haven’t gotten any indication at all that Auston Matthews would want to not be part of this, that his mindset has changed; the only scenario I see where it shifts…is if whoever comes in says…our best approach now is to rebuild,” Pagnotta said.
That possibility, however, seems unlikely based on comments from Keith Pelley, CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Pelley emphasized that the Maple Leafs’ outlook is more of a retool than a rebuild, while noting that the final direction will depend on the incoming head of hockey operations.
“We all know that the Maple Leafs have foundational pieces in place, so as a result, with those pieces, if we’re able to surround them with the right culture, structure and personnel both on and off the ice, then I would say we would be in a retool and not a rebuild,” Pelley said.
Toronto still has two games remaining before shifting full focus to the offseason, matchups against the Dallas Stars on Monday and the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.

Ultimately, how management reshapes the roster, whether it’s a retool or a bigger overhaul, could play a major role in Auston Matthews’ long-term future. For now, the star center seems committed, but the next moves by MLSE will likely determine if he remains central to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ plans.
