The anticipation for the Mitch Marner-Toronto Maple Leafs was through the roof for obvious reasons. Despite Marner’s insistence that he hadn’t spared a lot of thought about the game, all the publicity and drama that had once surrounded Marner’s departure from the Leafs were bound to culminate in this one grand showdown. The outcome of the battle left many, including a former Maple Leafs enforcer, at a loss for words.
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vegas Golden Knights Leaves Jay Rosehill Tongue-tied
Media interest around the game was heightened as expected. Moreover, an encounter between Marner and former teammate Auston Matthews, in which the former passed a puck to the latter during warmups, drew more attention and prompted many people to talk.
When asked about the interaction, Matthews bluntly stated that he had had enough of questions about Marner, before adding that his focus remains on securing a favorable outcome to the game.
The Maple Leafs started strong, but the Golden Knights were just not willing to end their prolonged winning streak, winning 6-5. The Leafs were plagued by a similar issue they had faced earlier in the season: they found it difficult to sustain their form in the third period.
“We can probably do a little better job in the third period. It’s frustrating to lose this game tonight. We got off to a great start. We played really well tonight as part of the game. We’ve just got to be smarter in certain situations, that’s what it boils down to tonight,” Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube admitted, as reported by NHL independent correspondent, Paul Delos Santos.
Jay Rosehill was found scrambling for words after the game, as the Golden Knights saved the day on their home ice. “What did we just watch?” the former Leafs player shared on his social media.
To add insult to injury, one of the Maple Leafs’ cornerstones, William Nylander, who had one goal and one assist against the Knights at T-Mobile Arena, left the game late in the first period with a lower-body injury. Not too long ago, the winger had missed six games due to injury woes. Berube does not have an update about the winger’s injury following the match.
The Golden Knights, who are now firmly positioned at the top of the Pacific Division, are reveling in the glory of a six-game winning streak. Playing against his former teammates, Marner had two assists. “Obviously, I know a lot of those guys very well, and I tried to read off some of the plays and some of the things that I think they might do. But it’s a competitive game, you always want to try to beat your buddies,” Marner shared in the aftermath of playing against the Maple Leafs.
Despite the many implications of a Toronto-Vegas showdown, at the end of the day, all that matters for the Leafs right now is that it was a close game they lost. The team had a shaky start to the season, but made a comeback after the Holidays. However, the Leafs have now lost two consecutive matches. A win needs to follow sooner rather than later.
