Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews Shuts Down Constant Mitch Marner Interrogation

Auston Matthews refuses to answer questions about Mitch Marner as the Golden Knights defeat the Maple Leafs 6-5 in overtime in their first matchup.

Tension was bound to hang heavy ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ showdown against the Vegas Golden Knights. After Mitch Marner squarely denied overthinking the matchup against the Maple Leafs, much to the dismay of many fans of his former franchise, Auston Matthews shared his growing exasperation with Marner’s questions.

Auston Matthews Draws the Line On Relentless Mitch Marner Inquiry

Marner parted ways with the Maple Leafs in a highly publicized, contentious exit that sharply divided fans on social media. The increased media scrutiny and, on several occasions, some very unforgiving criticism, were primarily the reasons why Marner found it suitable to head to the desert to join the Knights on a plump deal.

The Matthews-Marner partnership came to a quiet end, and so did the glorious period of the team’s former Core-Four, comprising Marner, Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares. There is never-ending speculation about Marner’s residual feelings for his former team and vice versa. Media interest has also been intense. Naturally, the curiosity reached a fever pitch ahead of the showdown.

Marner passed a puck over to Matthews during the warmups, and while that was an exchange that barely lasted a moment, it was enough to trigger endless speculation. However, Matthews was simply not willing to entertain any more questions about his former teammate.

“I didn’t look over, I don’t know. So, yeah. I think I have had enough of the Mitch questions. Let’s just get ready for the game and go from there,” Matthews impassionately stated when probed about his encounter with Marner. Matthews wanted to remind the media what actually mattered to him right before a game: the Maple Leafs’ performance on the ice.

As unwilling as Matthews was to engage in the never-ending Marner discourse, some Maple Leafs fans did not get the memo. Many Toronto fans who attended the game rained boos on Marner. Nonetheless, it was a tight game that kept viewers glued to their seats until the end, with the Knights successfully saving the day at home, winning 6-5 in OT.

According to Action Network, the Maple Leafs fanbase is second among the league’s “most obnoxious” fan bases, second behind the Boston Bruins. The recent turn of events has done little to better that image.

Most importantly, while the Leafs have shown signs of a resurgence lately after a particularly wobbly start to the season, they have now suffered two consecutive losses, and the pressure to turn things around is bound to increase from here.
