‘It’s a Crappy Thing’ — Maple Leafs’ $46.5M Winger Rolls His Eyes at Trade Deadline Links With Montreal Canadiens

The Toronto Maple Leafs closed out a difficult season on Wednesday, bringing an end to the NHL’s longest active playoff streak. What began with Stanley Cup expectations got disoriented by mid-March due to defensive breakdowns and a major injury to Auston Matthews.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Toronto will not be part of the postseason, placing the franchise at a fork in the road. As the team looks toward significant roster decisions, speculation around one young winger has gained traction, including reported links to the rival Montreal Canadiens, a narrative he has openly pushed back against.

Maple Leafs’ Matthew Knies Dismisses Canadiens Trade Buzz

Matthew Knies found himself at the center of trade speculation near the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, with reports linking him to the Montreal Canadiens in a potential high-profile deal. The 23-year-old winger, currently in the first season of a six-year, $46.5 million contract, was reportedly part of discussions that never materialized despite significant interest.

According to multiple reports, Montreal explored a major move before the deadline, with insiders pointing to Toronto’s steep asking price as a key factor in talks falling apart. The ask was believed to include combinations of first-round picks and top prospects.

Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes later confirmed he had been working on a “significant” deal that ultimately did not go through, adding to speculation around Knies’ involvement.

Despite the noise, Knies made it clear where he stands after Toronto’s season-ending loss to Ottawa. Speaking to reporters, he pushed back on the idea that trade interest should be viewed positively. “I wouldn’t want to look at it as a compliment, I’d look at it as a crappy thing. I don’t want to leave this group of guys… it doesn’t really matter what it was. I wouldn’t want to leave here,” he said, signaling a strong commitment to his current team.

The timing of these rumors aligns with a period of major change for Toronto. They finished with a 32-36-14 record and 78 points, ending bottom of the Atlantic Division and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016. A 7-game losing streak to close the season, combined with the firing of general manager Brad Treliving, has opened the door for a new leadership group to reassess the roster.

From a management perspective, Knies represents both value and flexibility. His contract does not include trade protection until its final year, giving the organization full control if it chooses to explore offers. At the same time, his age, physical style, and role within the lineup make him an appealing piece for a team looking to reset without a full rebuild.

As the offseason begins, the decision on Knies could signal how aggressive the Maple Leafs plan to be.
