Team USA is set to open its 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics campaign with a matchup against Latvia on Thursday at Milano Santagiulia Arena in Milan. With NHL players back on the Olympic stage, expectations are high, as is anticipation.
As the Americans begin their quest for gold, one question naturally comes up: when was the last time the United States stood atop the Olympic podium in men’s hockey?
A Look Back at America’s Last Olympic Gold
The United States has captured Olympic gold in men’s hockey twice. First in 1960 and then again in 1980. While the 1960 win in Squaw Valley was a major achievement, it’s the 1980 victory that has become legendary.
The 1980 “Miracle on Ice” saw the U.S. men’s hockey team achieve a historic, improbable gold medal at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. Coached by Herb Brooks, a team of amateur college players upset the defending four-time gold medalist Soviet Union 4-3. An event widely considered the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. After beating the Soviets, the team defeated Finland 4-2 to secure gold.
The win, during the Cold War, became a massive symbol of American patriotism and resilience. Key moments included Mike Eruzione’s game-winning goal and goalkeeper Jim Craig’s stellar performance, cementing the team in hockey lore.
Still Chasing the Next Gold
Since 1980, the United States has come close but hasn’t reclaimed the top spot. Team USA earned silver medals in 2002 (Salt Lake City) and 2010 (Vancouver), but gold has remained elusive.
As of the 2026 Games in Milan, that 1980 team still represents the last American men’s squad to win Olympic gold. They were recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their impact on American culture.
Current head coach Mike Sullivan knows that legacy well. Growing up in Massachusetts, he was inspired by the 1980 team and now has the opportunity to chase a similar moment on the Olympic stage.

“I get emotional thinking about it,” Sullivan said of coaching at the Olympics. “It’s the honor of a lifetime. I’ve thought about it a lot. What an incredible honor to coach the United States in these international events, whether it be the 4 Nations or the Olympics. It’s essentially the pinnacle of our game.
“It’s our best American-born players of this generation. And I have the opportunity to coach them.”
Winter Olympics Men’s Hockey Preliminary Round Schedule

Now, Team USA’s goal is clear. To bring home the country’s first men’s hockey gold medal in 46 years. Whether this group can create another miracle on ice remains to be seen, but the chase officially begins in Milan.
