KHL Prez Intervenes With Capitals Icon Alex Ovechkin’s NHL Future Up in the Air

KHL president Alexei Morozov weighs in on Alex Ovechkin’s future as he enters the final year of his contract, sparking speculation about his return to Russia.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is making headlines once again. But this time, the buzz isn’t about a highlight-reel goal or another milestone. It’s about his future.

Ovechkin is in the final year of the five-year, $47.5 million contract he signed with Washington, and with no extension in place, speculation is growing. Retirement? One last NHL deal? A return to Russia? Everyone wants to know what comes next for the Capitals legend.

Now, the conversation has taken another turn after the KHL’s president added a new layer of uncertainty.

Alex Ovechkin at Crossroads As KHL President Gets Involved

At 40 years old, Ovechkin has not committed to playing beyond this season. While retirement remains a possibility, his on-ice production suggests he’s far from finished.

Through 59 games, Ovechkin has 48 points (22 goals, 26 assists). His 20th goal marked his 21st 20-goal season, passing Ron Francis for second-most in NHL history. And also moving closer to a Gordie Howe record.

Before the season, Ovechkin said, “I’m going to enjoy the season, and we’ll see what’s going to happen.”

While Ovechkin focuses on the present, others are already thinking about his future. KHL president and former NHL forward Alexei Morozov recently addressed the situation in an interview with RIA Novosti’s Andrey Senchenko.

He explained that the league is not approaching Ovechkin at the moment because he remains under contract in the NHL. And any discussions about a potential future in the KHL would take place this summer.

Morozov added that he and Ovechkin remain in regular contact. “We talk often, see each other in the summer, and discuss various topics. A few years ago, he asked me how things are going in the KHL. He knows everything that’s going on in the league. If he decides to continue his career in the KHL, we’ll be delighted,” he said.

Those comments immediately fueled speculation about a possible return to Russia.

A Potential Homecoming?

A return to the KHL would bring Ovechkin full circle. He developed in Dynamo Moscow’s system, played four seasons there, and even returned during the 2012-13 lockout alongside Nicklas Backstrom. He now serves in an advisory role with the club.

Dynamo president Viktor Voronin has said the team is ready to negotiate once his NHL contract expires, while Capitals GM Chris Patrick recently noted no retirement discussions have taken place, leaving Ovechkin’s future undecided.

Morozov’s comments don’t necessarily mean Alex Ovechkin is leaving the NHL. But they do confirm that the KHL is waiting and ready. For now, Ovechkin remains locked in on helping Washington push for the playoffs.
