‘Jon Cooper Should Be Fired’ — Oilers Fans Throw a Hail Mary to Get Kris Knoblauch Out and TB Lightning HC In

The Edmonton Oilers’ early exit from the 2026 playoffs stunned the hockey world, especially for a team widely seen as a Stanley Cup favorite. Their run came to a sudden halt with a 4-2 series loss to the Anaheim Ducks, sending Edmonton into an offseason that now reeks of uncertainty.

Disgruntled fans are now floating a bold idea, one that feels like a long shot but hasn’t stopped gaining traction: move on from Kris Knoblauch and try to bring in Jon Cooper.

Oilers Fans Push for a Massive Coaching Swing

After reaching back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, the sight of the Oilers crashing out in the first round, especially against a young Ducks team, has left more questions than answers. Naturally, that has put pressure on the coaching staff, with Knoblauch now under the microscope following a disappointing finish.

At the same time, the Tampa Bay Lightning were eliminated in Game 7 by the Montreal Canadiens, falling 2-1 in a tight contest. That loss marked Tampa Bay’s fourth straight first-round exit under Cooper, sparking talk that the organization could consider a coaching change.

Oilers fans didn’t miss that moment. Social media quickly filled with calls to bring Cooper to Edmonton if Tampa decides to part ways with him.

The suggestion from Edmonton Journal analyst David Staples added a layer of legitimacy to the chatter. “Will Tampa’s Jon Cooper or Bruce Cassidy replace Knoblauch as Edmonton Oilers coach?” he questioned.

But not everyone was measured. A beat writer at Oilers Nation calling for Cooper to be fired outright felt more like frustration spilling over than a grounded take. “He keeps failing them,” he said. The Bleed Oil Blue channel dubbing him “The perfect coach” for the Oilers reflects the other side of the coin.

NHL analyst Karman Gill took the most direct route, essentially connecting the dots fans want to see. “Jon Cooper should be fired and given a head coaching job for the Oilers,” Gill said.

Overall, the reactions say less about Cooper’s actual situation and more about the urgency and impatience surrounding the Oilers.

Part of the intrigue comes from Connor McDavid himself. Back in March, after a loss to Tampa Bay, Connor McDavid praised Jon Cooper, calling the Lightning “perfectly coached” and “extremely well organized.”

That comparison raised eyebrows, sparking talk about a possible disconnect with Kris Knoblauch and even the Olympic connection between Cooper and McDavid on Team Canada. Though he later clarified his comments, the damage was already done.

For now, it’s all hypothetical. There’s no confirmation that Tampa Bay will move on from Cooper, or that Edmonton is ready to make a coaching change.

But if things shift, the Oilers could be in a position to make a bold move. It may sound like a Hail Mary, but in Edmonton, it’s a conversation that won’t go away.
