What started as a routine postgame comment quickly turned into a major talking point across the NHL. Connor McDavid’s remarks about coaching sparked debate, fueled speculation, and drew widespread attention.
As the conversation grew, Jon Cooper stepped in to share his perspective on the situation involving the Edmonton Oilers captain.
Jon Cooper Weighs In on Connor McDavid’s Coaching Comments
The conversation started after Edmonton’s 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. McDavid praised Cooper, who recently coached him during Team Canada’s 2026 Olympic silver-medal run, while also pointing to Tampa Bay’s structure and preparation.
When asked what it would take for Edmonton to reach that level, McDavid suggested it was something head coach Kris Knoblauch would need to address.
The remarks quickly went viral, with many interpreting them as a subtle jab at his own coach. McDavid later clarified he was “not taking shots” and said he was surprised his comments were viewed as criticism.
Cooper later addressed the situation. “That’s a tough one for me to comment on. I think I did see it, and to be honest, I didn’t take it the way I think other people took it. Everything that comes out of Connor’s mouth is dissected because of what a phenomenal player he is and what he means to this league,” Cooper said.
Cooper noted that comments can be interpreted differently, but based on his experience coaching McDavid, the Oilers captain has consistently spoken highly of his team and praised how they play.
He added that anything McDavid says tends to be heavily scrutinized, particularly if there’s even a hint of frustration.
Cooper also stressed, “He loves Edmonton. He loves playing there. The stuff we talked about at the Olympics, you know, they’re going to try and make another run. It hurts that the other big boy is out for a bit, but when he comes back, that team has all the makings again.”
In Cooper’s view, McDavid’s comments were largely misinterpreted and amplified because of the attention that follows a player of his stature.

Knoblauch also downplayed the situation, taking a broader perspective when addressing the media. “When things are going well, there’s very little criticism,” he said. “When there’s losing, everyone needs to look in the mirror.”
The Oilers, meanwhile, responded on the ice with a 5-2 win over the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday and now sit second in the Pacific Division. They will look to keep that momentum going when they face the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.
