The spotlight around the Edmonton Oilers just got even brighter and more uncomfortable.
What started as a postgame comment from Connor McDavid has now snowballed into a full-blown debate, with a former NHL executive accusing the superstar of publicly undermining his own head coach, Kris Knoblauch.
Former Executive Craig Button Calls Out Connor McDavid Over Coach Comments
The discussion began after Edmonton’s 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Following the game, McDavid praised Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper and the team’s structured style of play.
McDavid described the Lightning as a team with “a great system” that is “perfectly coached.” When asked what it would take for the Oilers to reach that level, he responded by saying it was “a coaching question” and suggested reporters direct that question to Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch.
Those remarks quickly went viral, with many interpreting them as a subtle jab at his own coach, especially since McDavid has previously played under Cooper with Team Canada.
Speaking to reporters after practice on Monday, McDavid tried to clear the air. He insisted his comments were not meant as criticism of Knoblauch. “We’re not taking shots… It was more just complimentary of a great team in this league that came in and played a good game. Nothing more than that,” McDavid said.
He also admitted he was surprised by how quickly the comments snowballed into a bigger controversy than he intended.
Not everyone is buying McDavid’s explanation. Former Calgary Flames executive and current analyst Craig Button was particularly critical of the Oilers captain. “I’d hate to hear what he has to say about a coach that… got him to the Stanley Cup final and back-to-back years,” Button said.
Button also pointed out that Edmonton’s current struggles stem more from roster construction than coaching decisions, suggesting management’s moves over the past two summers have left the team thinner and less competitive. “So, you want to blame the coach, you can say, “Okay, listen. We could be a little bit better here. We could do a little bit more.”
“At the end of the day, Connor McDavid, you have choices. You signed a two-year contract extension. Oh, boy. Now you don’t like it. Sorry. You’re not getting any forgiveness from me for your comments. Talk about, he didn’t just take the bus and run over the coach. He ran him over, backed it up, and said, “Wait a sec. Did I really get him?”

In Button’s view, McDavid’s comments unfairly place responsibility on the bench rather than the roster.
The controversy comes at an uneasy time for Edmonton, which is trying to regain momentum after consecutive losses.
With the spotlight now on both McDavid and the coaching staff, the Oilers will look to shift the conversation back to the ice when they face the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday.
