Insider Places Cloud of Doubt Over Jets Star Connor Hellebuyck’s Future in Winnipeg

The offseason has arrived with more questions than answers for the Winnipeg Jets, and the biggest one revolves around their franchise goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck. After a disappointing campaign that saw Winnipeg miss the playoffs, an NHL insider believes uncertainty is beginning to creep into Hellebuyck’s long-term future with the club.

Uncertainty Looms Over Connor Hellebuyck’s Future

The Jets’ season fell well short of expectations. One year after winning the Presidents’ Trophy, Winnipeg dropped near the bottom of the Central Division and finished the 2025-26 campaign with just 82 points, missing the postseason entirely. The sudden regression sparked frustration across the roster, none more notable than Hellebuyck’s.

The star goalie just finished Year 2 of his seven-year, $59.5 million deal. He has a full no-movement clause next season, then a 10-team no-trade list afterward, giving him significant control if tensions rise.

At his season-ending media availability, Hellebuyck didn’t hide his disappointment. “What we did this year was unacceptable. No one wants to be part of that,” he said.

Those comments quickly fueled speculation about his future, particularly given Winnipeg’s long-standing challenges attracting top unrestricted free agents. Geographic location, market size, and climate have historically made it harder for the franchise to land high-profile talent. The Jets often appear on players’ no-trade lists, further complicating roster upgrades.

That context is exactly what NHL insider Elliotte Friedman pointed to when discussing the situation. “Last season’s moves went poorly, and twice, Connor Hellebuyck referred to player procurement limitations. He needs to be convinced they can get the help they need,” Friedman said.

The concern isn’t just about perception; it’s tied to results. Winnipeg struggled defensively throughout the season, and Hellebuyck’s numbers dipped to a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage, reflecting the lack of support in front of him.

Hellebuyck himself acknowledged the difficulty of building in Winnipeg. “Can you get the pieces that you need? Will the players come? These are always questions that you have in Winnipeg,” he said. “I’ve made it my home and I like it here, but the majority of the league doesn’t feel the same way.”

Friedman’s remarks suggest the message from the goaltender is clear: the front office must prove it can improve the roster. Whether that means making a bold trade for impact talent or strengthening the defense, the organization may need to act decisively to keep its franchise cornerstone confident in the direction.

For now, Hellebuyck is still under contract and central to Winnipeg’s plans. But with the offseason underway, the Jets need to show real improvement, or the uncertainty around their star goalie’s future will only intensify.
