Hall of Famer Singles Out Flyers’ Round 1 MVP Who Knocked Sidney Crosby’s Penguins Out of 2026 Playoffs

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff run came to a heartbreaking end in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the Philadelphia Flyers sealed the series with a 1-0 overtime win in Game 6.

Now, a Hall of Famer has pointed to the Flyers’ standout performer as the primary reason for the win, the player who ultimately shut the door on Sidney Crosby and the Penguins’ 2026 postseason hopes.

Hall of Famer Credits Flyers Star for Series Win

Coming into the matchup, the Penguins were viewed as favorites. They finished second in the Metropolitan Division with a 41-25-16 record and 98 points, while the Flyers also had 98 points but placed third.

Philadelphia came out flying, taking control early with wins in the first three games, winning 3-2, 3-0, and 5-2, to grab a commanding 3-0 series lead. Pittsburgh refused to go quietly into the night, battling back with a 4-2 win in Game 4 and a 3-2 victory in Game 5 to force a Game 6.

That final game turned into a tense, defensive battle. After three scoreless periods, the Penguins pushed hard, outshooting the Flyers 42-32 and controlling much of the play late. But it was Cam York who delivered the decisive moment, scoring with just 2:28 remaining in overtime to end the series.

Still, the real story of the night belonged to Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar. He turned aside all 42 shots he faced, putting together a flawless performance when it mattered most.

Hall of Famer Chris Pronger didn’t hesitate to give credit where credit was due, saying, “That right there is all Dan Vladar! What a performance. Take a bow.”

Vladar was exceptional throughout the series, posting a .937 save percentage with two shutouts while allowing just 10 goals across six games. His 42-save effort also set a new franchise mark for saves in a series-clinching win, surpassing Phil Myre’s previous record of 41 set in 1980.

He also joined an elite list, becoming the fifth Flyers goalie to record a shutout in a series-clinching game.

After the loss, Sidney Crosby reflected on how close the Penguins were to forcing a Game 7. “It’s unfortunate,” Crosby said. “I thought, especially in the second half and overtime, we had some really good looks. We were a shot away from going back to Pittsburgh. It just comes down to bounces sometimes.”

Even with the tough exit, Pittsburgh taking a step back into the playoffs for the first time since 2022 is a sign the team is moving in the right direction.

Meanwhile, the Flyers advance to the second round. They’ll take on the Eastern Conference’s top-seeded Carolina Hurricanes, who will have had ample time to prep after sweeping Brady Tkachuk’s Ottawa Senators.
