The first round of the playoffs is turning out to be Sidney Crosby’s worst nightmare. The Battle of Pennsylvania was supposed to be a statement series for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers, but, so far, it appears only one team has done their homework for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and it’s definitely not the Penguins.
As the Flyers flattened the Penguins for the second consecutive game, rather than Crosby, all eyes were on Philadelphia starlet Porter Martone, who etched his name in history.
Porter Martone Will Go Down in NHL History After Latest Feat Against Pittsburgh Penguins
Given the Penguins’ form throughout the course of this season, such an outcome in the first two playoff games beggars belief. While the Penguins put up a fight in Game 1 over the weekend, losing 3-2, Philadelphia completely dominated Game 2 with a shutout win.
Ever since Crosby joined the Penguins, Pittsburgh has been 3-1 against the Flyers in the postseason. The last time the teams clashed in the playoffs in 2018, the Pens emerged victorious 4-2. However, things could not be different this time around.
The Flyers have been steady since the Olympic break. It is clear that under Rick Tocchet’s guidance, Philadelphia is determined to change things.
Porter Martone, for instance, will undoubtedly be at the helm of a new and powerful Flyers team. The 19-year-old became the first teenager in NHL history to score the winning goal in their first two career playoff games.

Over the nine games he has played so far, Martone has accumulated 10 points. In the aftermath of his tremendous showing, the Flyers rookie expressed his gratitude to the team that helped him make the big jump from the NCAA to the NHL.
“I think I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the guys in this room. They’ve taught me a lot, not just on the hockey side, but the life side. I’ve said this before, but I think I made the jump (from college) because I thought I was ready, and I thought I could help this team,” Martone stated, per NHL correspondent Wes Crosby.
On the other hand, the situation is a little more grim in Pittsburgh. Head coach Dan Muse stated that the team ought to channel its frustration into a comeback. “There should be frustration. (We) should be frustrated. We just lost two games at home. And so, with frustration comes how are you going to respond?”
Captain Crosby has continued to express his faith in the Penguins’ ability to recover from the worst kind of setback, as they have done before. “I think we’ve been in some tough spots all year. I think that getting on the road and having a situation like this, hopefully, brings out the best in us again here.”
Luckily for the franchise, Stuart Skinner has been one of the best performers in the lineup. Skinner has gathered extensive playoff experience playing with the Edmonton Oilers all these years, so Pittsburgh has a reliable postseason goalie in him.
As for the rest of the team, they need to urgently rediscover their form and redeem themselves in Game 3, or an 0-3 hole may be nigh impossible to climb out of.
