The legal fight escalated on Monday when Patel filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over claims of “excessive drinking” and “unexplained absences.”
His legal team argued those statements were fabricated and published with the intent to damage his reputation, adding that prior warnings about inaccuracies were ignored.
During a media appearance, Patel directly addressed the criticism tied to a locker-room video from the 2026 Winter Olympics. The footage showed him celebrating with members of the U.S. men’s hockey team after their gold medal win in Milan, including Matthew Tkachuk placing his medal around Patel’s neck.
Responding to scrutiny, Patel said, “I’m like an everyday American who loves his country, loves the sport of hockey, and champions my friends when they raise a gold medal and invite me in to celebrate.” He also added, “ I’ve never been intoxicated on the job, and that’s why we filed a $250 million lawsuit. Any one of you who wants to participate — bring it on. I’ll see you in court.”
The video itself became a focal point of a broader debate in February, showing Patel chugging beer while celebrating with players in a lively locker-room setting.
Critics questioned the timing of the celebration, noting it occurred during active responsibilities tied to federal matters. Patel maintained that the trip included official duties, including meetings with international law enforcement and security agencies connected to the Olympic event.
Outside reactions added another dimension to the situation. A report from NBC indicated that President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Patel’s conduct during the trip, including both the celebration and the use of government aircraft. However, a White House statement emphasized continued confidence in Patel’s role and pointed to broader law enforcement outcomes.
