The Ottawa Senators opened their playoff series with a 2-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, but much of the early attention centered on captain Brady Tkachuk and his attempt to set the tone just seconds into Game 1. The decision sparked debate, with a former NHL player questioning whether the approach helped or hurt Ottawa.
Ottawa Senators Captain Brady Tkachuk Draws Criticism
Just three seconds after the opening faceoff, Tkachuk dropped the gloves with Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal. The fight began with Tkachuk landing a few right hands, but Staal responded with several heavy punches that eventually brought the Senators captain down to the ice before officials stepped in. The exchange energized the crowd at the Lenovo Center.
Former NHL defenseman Jason Demers questioned the decision, suggesting, “Not sure if Game 1 on the road initiating a fight with the other teams captain is wise? Unless you’re 100% sure you are KO’ing him…. Lenovo was buzzing after that.”
Demers’ perspective highlighted how the tone-setting attempt may have backfired. Instead of quieting the home crowd, the sequence appeared to energize it, giving the Hurricanes an emotional boost early in the contest.
Tkachuk, however, viewed the situation from another angle. He explained afterward that the goal was to show the series would be physical and intense from the outset. “I mean, just wanna show it’s gonna be a long series and he wanted to do the same thing. So, guess building loved it, got the energy going, got playoffs started for the whole league, yeah,” he said.
Staal also welcomed the challenge, noting he expected it from a physical player like Tkachuk. “He asked me, and I kind of expected it. He’s a physical player, he was ready to roll, and so am I, so is this group. It’s part of the gig. We’re not backing down from anyone. We’re ready to roll,” Staal said.
After a scoreless first period, Logan Stankoven opened the scoring early in the second period, finishing a passing play from Jackson Blake and Taylor Hall.
The Senators believed they had tied the game in the third, but a video review confirmed Frederik Andersen kept the puck out. Later in the period, Hall added insurance by poking in a rebound after Linus Ullmark made an earlier stop.
