‘That Was a Direct Shot’ — Ex-Hurricanes Winger Claims Mitch Marner Deliberately Threw Shade at Leafs’ William Nylander

Mitch Marner appears to be a man reborn since joining the Vegas Golden Knights, blossoming into one of the NHL’s biggest postseason storylines.

After years of facing relentless criticism with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner is now dominating the playoffs on a legitimate Stanley Cup contender while completely changing the narrative around his game.

However, some of his postgame comments following Vegas’ dramatic Game 3 5-3 comeback against the Colorado Avalanche have seemingly ruffled some feathers, as one former NHL player claims Marner may have subtly taken a shot at former teammate William Nylander.

Mitch Marner Accused of Taking a ‘Direct’ Shot at William Nylander

For most of the first period in Game 3, Colorado looked fully in control after building a 3-0 lead on home ice. But Vegas completely flipped the game over the final two periods, scoring five unanswered goals to take a commanding 3-0 series lead in the Western Conference Final.

Marner once again played a huge role in the comeback, recording two assists to increase his NHL-leading playoff total to 21 points through 15 postseason games.

After the game, Marner was asked about the mindset inside Vegas’s locker room after falling behind early. “I think we obviously have an older group as well that just stays patient and stays calm. And, you know, we don’t turn on each other. We don’t get mad at each other. We know everyone’s trying to do their best out there every single shift,” Marner said.

He added that the message during intermission was simply to remain patient because the team was still generating chances and eventually would be rewarded.

Those comments immediately caught the attention of former Carolina Hurricanes winger Jeff O’Neill.

O’Neill read between the lines and suggested Marner’s remarks were a reference to a viral moment involving Nylander during Toronto’s 2024 playoff series against the Boston Bruins, when he was seen telling Marner to “grow up” during a heated bench exchange.

“I’m a professional at breaking down that. Yeah, that is a direct shot for the ‘Grow up, bro, this isn’t junior hockey’ comment on the bench with William Nylander. I would throw shade like that in little subtle ways too,” O’Neill said.

In O’Neill’s view, Marner’s comments reflected how much calmer and more composed the veteran atmosphere in Vegas is compared to the intense pressure he experienced during his time in Toronto.

Whether Marner intentionally referenced his former team remains unclear.

Still, the comments have added even more intrigue to the growing contrast between Marner’s success in Vegas and the continued instability surrounding the Maple Leafs.
