‘It’s Time To Have That Happen in Edmonton’ — Connor McDavid Swears Oilers Aren’t Insane Ahead of Mike Babcock Gamble

Connor McDavid explains why he supports Mike Babcock's arrival in Edmonton despite the controversy surrounding the hire.

Connor McDavid has spent years carrying the weight of expectations in Edmonton, and very little about his career has been easy. Every season seems to bring a new debate about what the Oilers must do differently to finally reach the pinnacle of the hockey world.

This time, however, the conversation is not centered on roster additions or tactical adjustments. Instead, it revolves around a coaching hire that many around the league would have avoided, setting up a fascinating test of conviction inside the Oilers’ locker room.

Connor McDavid Backs Mike Babcock as Oilers Embrace Accountability

McDavid is not shying away from the scrutiny surrounding Mike Babcock’s arrival in Edmonton. If anything, the Oilers captain appears ready to lean into it.

Babcock’s hiring immediately became one of the NHL’s most debated decisions. His coaching resume includes a Stanley Cup and international success, but it also comes with years of criticism from former players and the controversy that led to his departure from Columbus in 2023.

Despite that history, Edmonton’s leadership group believes the veteran coach could provide something the organization has been missing.

This belief became clear during McDavid’s conversation with Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, where he openly discussed the possibility of being held accountable by a coach in ways he has rarely experienced during his NHL career.

“I know (Babcock) alluded to the fact that it’s easy to say in June, and it is easy to say in June. It might be a little bit different when it’s November,” McDavid said. “But we’ve all agreed that this is what we want. This is what we’re looking for.”

These remarks are significant because they reveal that Edmonton’s core players were not passive observers in the hiring process. Before accepting the position, Babcock met with McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman.

The discussions centered on expectations, accountability, and whether the group’s top players were willing to embrace a more demanding environment.

McDavid left little doubt about his answer.

“I don’t plan on having that happen to me very much,” he said when asked about being hard on him during a game. “But when it does, it’ll be deserved, and we’ll move forward, and we’ll learn from it.”

The Oilers appear determined to build a structure that relies less on star power alone. Babcock has already emphasized the need for stronger contributions throughout the lineup, while associate coach D.J. Smith is expected to oversee a more disciplined defensive framework.

General manager Stan Bowman has also added players designed to strengthen depth and create a more balanced roster.

For McDavid, the appeal of the change is straightforward. After years of chasing the Stanley Cup with largely the same core, he believes a different voice and a different standard could help push the team forward.

“It’s time to have that happen in Edmonton. It’s time,” McDavid said. “I’m excited about that challenge to be pushed by a coach, because it’s been a really long time in Edmonton.”

Whether the gamble succeeds remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Edmonton’s captain is fully invested in the experiment.
