The Boston Bruins may not be eager to create another headline this summer, but one of their most dependable forwards keeps finding his way into league-wide conversations. Every team searching for help at center seems to be looking in the same direction, and that has placed Boston under a brighter spotlight than expected.
The noise grew louder as rival teams continued checking in, while observers wondered whether the Bruins would capitalize on a player’s rising value. Instead of letting the speculation run unchecked, the organization offered a firm response.
Bruins GM Don Sweeney Addresses Pavel Zacha Rumors Amid Canadiens’ Interest
Pavel Zacha’s name has surfaced in rumors for weeks, with the Montreal Canadiens among the teams linked to the Boston Bruins center. However, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney recently made it clear that Boston’s preferred outcome is not a trade.
Speaking with NHL reporter Ty Anderson, Sweeney addressed the speculation directly.
“My goal is to extend Pavel Zacha. He’s a big part of our team.”
This statement offers the clearest indication yet of Boston’s plans. Still, the interest is easy to understand.
Centers with proven offensive production are difficult to find, and Zacha is coming off the best season of his career. The Bruins forward posted 30 goals and 65 points in 78 games while playing a major role under head coach Marco Sturm.
He is also entering the final year of his 4-year, $19 million contract, which carries a team-friendly $4.75 million cap hit through the 2026-27 season, making him an attractive target for teams seeking help down the middle.

Montreal has been connected to Zacha because of its need for a reliable top-six center behind Nick Suzuki. Analysts have suggested he would fit well within the Canadiens’ lineup thanks to his size, versatility, and faceoff ability. The Winnipeg Jets, Detroit Red Wings, and Columbus Blue Jackets have also explored the market for center help.
Despite that demand, Boston is operating from a position of strength. The Bruins have more than $15 million in projected cap space and can begin negotiating an extension with Zacha on July 1. This flexibility gives management room to pursue a new contract without making immediate roster sacrifices.
At the same time, the organization understands why trade rumors are persisting. If extension talks become complicated, Zacha’s value could bring a significant return. Teams seeking a top-six center would likely need to offer premium assets, potentially including a first-round pick and additional young talent.

For now, though, Boston’s public stance remains unchanged. The Bruins may be listening to calls, but Sweeney’s comments suggest they are focused on keeping Zacha rather than sending him elsewhere.
As draft day approaches, this message may not stop the speculation, but it does clarify where Boston stands regarding one of the most discussed names on the trade market.
