The Elias Pettersson trade chatter has escalated into one of the most talked-about storylines of the 2026 offseason, with Vancouver Canucks fans split over what comes next for their former franchise centerpiece.
With Vancouver now navigating a reset under new leadership, moving Pettersson would represent a major shift in direction, signaling the start of a more aggressive rebuild. And now, one of the more intriguing ideas on the table involves the Detroit Red Wings stepping in as a potential trade partner.
Canucks-Red Wings Trade Rumor Emerges With Elias Pettersson Front and Center
Pettersson’s recent numbers have fueled the conversation. After exploding for 102 points in 2022-23, his production dropped sharply to 45 points in 2024-25, followed by a modest bounce-back to 51 points in 74 games this past season. For a player carrying a contract worth $92.8 million, those totals have fallen well short of expectations.
Beyond the stats, questions around consistency and preparation have followed him. Henrik and Daniel Sedin have both publicly pointed to areas such as offseason habits and mental approach, while former head coach Adam Foote was more direct in emphasizing that parts of his game simply still need refinement.
NHL analyst Max Bultman recently connected Detroit to the idea of acquiring Pettersson, suggesting, “For those wanting to see something bold from the Red Wings this summer, a trade for Pettersson would qualify.”
His view is simple: the upside is still there. Pettersson has already proven he can be a true elite center, including a 100-point season and multiple years producing at nearly a point-per-game pace. At 27, there is still a belief that the “peak version” of him hasn’t fully disappeared; it may just need the right environment to re-emerge.
Detroit, on paper, offers that possibility.
Why the Red Wings Make Sense
One of the key arguments is fit. A player like Lucas Raymond could potentially help unlock Pettersson’s scoring touch again through playmaking support, while younger forwards such as Nate Danielson bring speed, energy, and puck pressure that could complement his skill set.
The idea is that a refreshed lineup structure could restore confidence and consistency to Pettersson’s game, while also giving Detroit a legitimate long-term top-line center option.
As Bultman noted, even a version of Pettersson returning to 80% of his peak form would instantly become one of the most valuable assets in the league. “That’s quite valuable, and it’s rare for a player with that ceiling to become available. It’s unclear if Pettersson can get back to that level, of course, but that’s what makes it bold,” Bultman said.
Adding Pettersson would likely force Detroit to reshuffle its top six, possibly splitting up Larkin and Raymond to balance the lineup. Still, the upside is seen as worth the risk for the right team.
A deal also wouldn’t be easy, as Pettersson holds a full no-movement clause and must approve any trade. That adds uncertainty to an already complicated situation.
