Anthony Mantha Reveals Why Canadiens Talks Fell Apart
Anthony Mantha has finally addressed the speculation that closed in on him before he signed a two-year, $9.5 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.
The veteran winger confirmed there was genuine mutual interest, but discussions never progressed to the next stage between Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes and his agent Olivier Fortier, where a contract could actually be negotiated.
“There was interest from Montreal in me and vice versa, too. But when it came time to talk numbers and years, there was never anything offered,” Mantha said.
His comments offered a far different version of events than the public narrative that had built throughout free agency.
For weeks, Montreal was viewed as one of the leading destinations for the Longueuil, Quebec native after he produced a career-best season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, while the rumors gained momentum with time, nothing meaningful came out of it.
Although Mantha was coming off a 33-goal, 64-point campaign, the Canadiens remained committed to preserving flexibility during their youth-driven rebuild. Management also showed little interest in offering the type of three- or four-year contract Mantha initially sought in free agency.
There were hockey-related considerations as well.
Analysts questioned whether his style of play would match head coach Martin St. Louis’ system, while concerns surrounding consistency, defensive reliability, previous injuries, and limited postseason production likely factored into the organization’s evaluation.
New Jersey, meanwhile, presented something similar to what Mantha had been searching for. The Devils offered the term he could consider while raising three young children and projected him into a top-six role alongside elite playmakers such as Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt.
The contract also includes significant signing bonuses, giving the veteran both financial stability and an opportunity to contribute immediately to a playoff contender.
