‘I Can’t Change Today’ – Penguins HC Admits 5-1 Loss to Hurricanes Ranks Among PIT’s Worst

Dan Muse accepts blame for the Penguins' home loss to Carolina, admitting the team must fix its defensive lapses immediately.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have stayed in the playoff mix this season, but their level of play hasn’t been consistent. There have been a few outings where the team has looked off, especially against stronger opponents, and those moments are hard to overlook.

The recent loss at home felt like another example of that pattern, where things did not come together as expected.

Penguins Struggle in 5-1 Loss to Hurricanes

The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 5-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday at PPG Paints Arena, and the game tilted early in favor of the visitors. Carolina struck just 47 seconds into the first period when Sebastian Aho scored on a power play, setting the pace for the rest of the night. Pittsburgh struggled to settle in, and the Hurricanes kept control with quick transitions and effective puck movement.

One of the main issues for Pittsburgh was a stagnant start; the team did not record a shot until midway through the opening period. That lack of early pressure allowed Carolina to build confidence, and its special teams made the difference later.

The Hurricanes converted three of their five power-play chances. Seth Jarvis contributed a goal and two assists, while Aho added a goal and an assist. Nikolaj Ehlers also scored a power-play goal and recorded one assist.

Egor Chinakhov scored the lone goal for Pittsburgh, but the overall performance remained below expectations. Stuart Skinner made 21 saves, though the defensive coverage in front of him broke down at key moments.

The Penguins have allowed five or more goals in multiple losses this season, and this game followed a similar pattern where they could not recover once they fell behind.

Dan Muse Takes Responsibility for Penguins’ Performance

Head coach Dan Muse addressed the result after the game and accepted responsibility while pointing to the need for a quick response. Speaking to Kelsey Surmacz, he said, “I can’t change today. Wish I could, but I can’t. So, we’re gonna have to learn from it fast, learn from it quick.”

Despite this result, Pittsburgh still holds a strong position in the Metropolitan Division with a 35-18-16 record. However, recent games have shown that maintaining control through all three periods remains an issue. The team has also struggled in overtime situations, with 16 losses in extra time, which points to missed chances to secure points.

Looking Ahead to the Colorado Avalanche

The Penguins now turn their attention to a home matchup against the Colorado Avalanche on March 24. Colorado enters the game with a 46-13-10 record and presents a strong test on both ends of the ice. Pittsburgh will need better puck management and improved special teams after allowing multiple power-play goals in the last outing.

With experienced players like Sidney Crosby in the lineup, the expectation is a more complete effort in the next game.
