NHL Trade Rumors: Canadiens Urged To Reach For The Stars and Trade For $59,500,000 Team Canada Veteran

A Winnipeg superstar's uncertain future could create a surprising opportunity for the Montreal Canadiens to address a key need at center.

The Montreal Canadiens are entering a different phase of their rebuild. After spending several seasons stockpiling young talent and locking up key pieces of their future, it seems their goal has changed. The roster has taken meaningful steps forward, but questions remain about whether the team has enough depth down the middle to make a serious jump in the standings.

At the same time, uncertainty surrounding one of Winnipeg’s biggest stars has created fresh discussion across the league.

While the Canadiens are not viewed as a direct suitor for veteran netminder Connor Hellebuyck, any significant change in Winnipeg could reshape the trade market and potentially place an impact center within Montreal’s reach.

Connor Hellebuyck Trade Buzz Could Open The Door for Canadiens’ Center Search

Connor Hellebuyck’s name has become one of the biggest talking points of the NHL offseason, but not because Montreal is expected to pursue the superstar goaltender. Instead, the Canadiens are being connected to the ripple effects that could follow if Winnipeg decides to entertain a blockbuster move involving its franchise netminder.

The discussion gained momentum after insider James Murphy raised the possibility during an appearance on The Sick Podcast. Murphy asked, “Could the answer to the Montreal Canadiens’ second-line center problem be solved by the Winnipeg Jets trading disgruntled goalie Connor Hellebuyck?”

He then pointed to colleague Nick Lariviere’s belief that Montreal should remain patient and avoid sacrificing elite prospect Alexander Zharovsky in any major trade pursuit.

The theory centers on Winnipeg’s long-term outlook. If the Jets were ever forced into a significant roster reset following a Hellebuyck departure, many around the league believe veteran center Mark Scheifele could become available. This possibility is what makes the situation relevant to Montreal.

The Canadiens have been searching for a dependable second-line center behind Nick Suzuki, and Scheifele is a player who could immediately strengthen that role. Montreal also possesses the draft assets and salary cap flexibility needed to pursue a major transaction if the opportunity arises.

However, there is an important distinction between speculation and reality. TSN insider Darren Dreger recently acknowledged that the conversation surrounding Hellebuyck has expanded beyond Winnipeg. Dreger noted there is “more than talk, certainly noise” regarding the situation, but he also clarified that the Jets are not actively trying to move their star goaltender.

This stance makes sense given Winnipeg’s circumstances.

Hellebuyck remains under contract through the 2030-31 season and continues to be the foundation of the franchise.

The organization also lacks an obvious NHL-ready successor in goal. Backup Eric Comrie is headed toward free agency, while prospects Thomas Milic and Isaac Poulter are still developing.

Dreger further explained that any potential trade would require an enormous return because Winnipeg would need help at multiple positions while simultaneously replacing one of the league’s premier goaltenders.

For now, Montreal’s interest remains indirect. The Canadiens are certainly not shopping for an $8.5 million goalie when starter Jakub Dobes and backup Jacob Fowler are seen as a big part of the organization’s plan. Instead, they are being urged to watch and see whether developments in Winnipeg could eventually bring a high-end center to the trade market.

Until then, the Canadiens remain observers rather than participants, waiting to see if one blockbuster move could create the opportunity they have been seeking.
