The 2026 Winter Olympics men’s hockey tournament ended in heartbreak for Canada. In a dramatic gold medal game, Team USA edged Canada 2-1 in overtime on Sunday, denying the Canadians what many believed was their destiny.

For Connor McDavid, it was a painful finish to what had otherwise been a historic tournament.

Canada entered the final as the favorites as powered by McDavid’s brilliance from start to finish. The Edmonton Oilers captain led the entire tournament in scoring with 13 points, two goals, and 11 assists. Earning MVP honors, Best Forward recognition, and a spot on the Olympic All-Star Team.

His 13-point performance also set a new Olympic scoring record for an NHL player at the Winter Games, surpassing the previous mark of 11 points shared by Finnish greats Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.

Despite his dominance, the ultimate prize slipped away in overtime.

Back in Edmonton, the loss was felt deeply. Oilers forward Adam Henrique didn’t hide his emotions.

“Your heart breaks for him. We know how much it means to him… how much he means to our team. I think the world got a glimpse really, if they haven’t already. You know, how much he means to our group here. And now certainly Canada knows that how much he meant to that team and certainly the rest of the world being able to see that. It’s pretty special.” Henrique said.

The Olympic disappointment doesn’t erase what has been another dominant season for McDavid. He currently leads the NHL in scoring with 96 points.

Earlier this month, in a candid piece for The Players’ Tribune, McDavid wrote about his hunger to win: “If I can be real here for a second, I just want to win something again. That’s what was so incredible about the 4 Nations last year .”

That desire was evident throughout the Olympics, in every shift, every assist, every burst of speed.

What Comes Next for Edmonton?

Henrique is expected to return to action on Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks. Marking his first game since Jan. 6, after blocking a shot against the Nashville Predators.

As for McDavid, his immediate return to the lineup remains uncertain. Head coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the emotional and physical toll of the Olympic run. “When he exactly joins the team, and when he’s ready to play, we’ll obviously have to have some conversations with him,” Knoblauch said Sunday.

The Oilers currently sit second in the Pacific Division. But had dropped three straight games before the Olympic break.

For now, though, the focus remains on what McDavid showed on the world stage.
