Ex-Team Canada Olympian Believes Connor McDavid Just Settled Hart Trophy Race With 5PT Masterclass

Connor McDavid's five-point masterclass against the Sharks may have just settled the Hart Trophy race, Jason Demers claims.

The race for the Hart Memorial Trophy is heating up, and Connor McDavid has just made a major statement in the mix. After a dazzling 5-point performance, an ex-Team Canada Olympian believes McDavid may have all but clinched the award.

How Oilers Captain Connor McDavid’s 5-Point Night Impacts the Hart Trophy Debate

The Hart Trophy, awarded to the player “adjudged to be the most valuable to his team,” has sparked endless debate this season. Recently, a poll by the NHL on X listed Nikita Kucherov (42%), Nathan MacKinnon (39%), and Macklin Celebrini (10%) as the top contenders; McDavid wasn’t even mentioned. His absence raised eyebrows, given his dominant campaign.

While fans and analysts acknowledge McDavid as arguably the best player in the NHL, questions remain about whether he is the most “valuable” in the Hart context. Other players like Celebrini, MacKinnon, Kucherov, and even Matthew Schaefer have strong cases for the award.

McDavid’s latest performance, however, makes a strong argument for him. He scored a hat trick and added two assists in the Edmonton Oilers’ 5-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, marking his 15th career hat trick. That game pushed him to 133 points (47 goals, 86 assists) in 79 games, widening his lead for a sixth Art Ross Trophy.

Jason Demers, who represented Team Canada at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, weighed in: “McDavid might have just taken the Hart trophy with his last two performances, not to mention his body of work this season. He absolutely amazes to the point that a goal like he scores last night off the rush seems meh.”

McDavid has factored into nearly half of the Oilers’ goals this season, underscoring his value. While Celebrini has been pivotal in keeping the Sharks in playoff contention, Kucherov has tallied 127 points in 72 games despite missing time with an injury.

MacKinnon stands out with a team-leading 51 goals. Even the New York Islanders owe much of their playoff push to Schaefer.

Still, Demers believes McDavid’s combination of scoring, playmaking, and impact makes him the clear favorite.

Despite the accolades, McDavid keeps his focus on the team. After the game, he said, “We’ve got three games left. We’ve still got to punch our ticket to the playoffs. Those individual things are nice but not at the top of mind.”

As the regular season winds down, McDavid’s 5-point masterclass has reignited debate, making it hard to see anyone else overtaking him in the Hart Trophy race. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can turn this stellar season into another MVP award.
