Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand found himself at the center of controversy following Tuesday night’s 3–2 overtime loss to the Canadiens. During the extra frame, Marchand caught Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson with an elbow to the head. The play resulted in only a minor roughing penalty on the ice.
Given the nature of the hit, many expected the NHL Department of Player Safety to step in with a hearing. Instead, no supplemental discipline followed. A decision that quickly sparked frustration among league insiders and analysts.
NHL Faces Heat After Brad Marchand’s Hit on Mike Matheson Goes Unpunished
The fallout became even louder when Matheson missed Montreal’s 7-5 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday due to an upper-body injury. Meanwhile, Marchand remains eligible to play in Friday’s Winter Classic, where the Panthers will host the New York Rangers at LoanDepot Park in Miami.
The contrast between the two situations has fueled frustration, especially given the spotlight surrounding the Winter Classic and Marchand’s role as one of the event’s marquee players.
Several prominent hockey voices questioned why the league chose not to take further action. TSN analyst Eric Macramalla was among the most vocal, writing on X, “Marchand should be suspended for this shot to Matheson’s head. The head was the main point of contact and the contact was avoidable (Rule 48). But he’ll just get fined.” In the end, Marchand wasn’t even fined.
Macramalla later added that Matheson missed the game with what appeared to be a concussion, while Marchand was still cleared to play in the outdoor game the following day, saying, “The League needs to reexamine its priorities.”
Canadiens senior columnist Eric Engels echoed that sentiment, posting, “Turns out Mike Matheson not able to play in the end. But hey, Brad Marchand will play in the Winter Classic…”
NHL analyst Stu Cowan also weighed in, saying, “Wonder why NHL didn’t suspend Brad Marchand for intentionally elbowing #Habs Mike Matheson in the head?… Marchand will play in Winter Classic tomorrow.”
NHL analyst Anthony Martineau was equally critical, noting that Mike Matheson was ruled unfit to play, while Brad Marchand faced no disciplinary action. He wrote, “Player safety is our priority.” Prove it. CONSISTENTLY. The NHL covers itself in ridicule with every missed opportunity like this one.”
Even well-known insider Elliotte Friedman admitted surprise at the outcome, stating, “I admit I’m surprised, I thought there would be for the contact to the head. My suspicions on why it won’t be a suspension: *NHL felt it was a penalty on the ice, that’s it. *Marchand elbow low and tucked; Matheson low to ice”

The incident adds to Marchand’s long disciplinary history, which includes an unsportsmanlike conduct fine earlier this season and eight suspensions and fines over his 15-year career, while also renewing concerns about consistency in NHL player safety rulings.
