NHL Trade Deadline Rumors: Washington Capitals Urged to Trade For $65,000,000 Winger

The Washington Capitals are fifth in the Metropolitan Division, and playoff odds are looking like a challenge at this point in the season. The Capitals need to deliver a spectacular March to reignite their postseason hopes. And while they are off to a bad start with a loss against the Utah Mammoth, with the trade deadline looming, the Caps have an opportunity to add a difference-maker to their roster.

Given the St. Louis Blues’ underwhelming 2025-26 season, expect the team to be a big seller this deadline. Standout winger Jordan Kyrou is on the Blues’ list of tradeable assets. The Capitals are prioritizing securing a top-six winger at the deadline and are expected to make a big splash to that end. Could Kyrou be the end of Washington’s search? Contributing to The Athletic, Sean Gentille certainly sees merit in such a development.

“The Caps have said they’re looking to add a top-six winger. No surprise — and they’re not alone. We’re saying GM Chris Patrick gets something done, though. Hoping to make a big addition is one thing; landing the plane is something else. Jordan Kyrou would make a ton of sense,” Gentille wrote.

Kyrou is in the third year of his eight-year, $65 million contract with the Blues, and while the 27-year-old winger has not come up in trade rumours as aggressively as Robert Thomas, for instance, the Blues are willing to listen to offers on Kyrou, according to Elliotte Friedman.

However, given that there is no guarantee the Capitals will make the playoffs, any development on the trade front is sure to be affected. The Caps could very well decide to postpone big splash plans to the summer. However, if they absolutely have to add a winger to the fold, they might get things going and execute the plan at the deadline.

“…the Washington Capitals continue to look for a scoring winger. But that also could be an offseason thing. The viable options for what they’re seeking are not many at the moment. And given that they’re no lock to make the playoffs, it might make more sense to wait until the summer. But I wouldn’t totally rule it out this week,” Pierre LeBrun wrote in a recent contribution to The Athletic.

As interesting as the potential of a development between the Capitals and Blues for Kyrou might be, it is important not to get our hopes too high. Kyrou has a full no-trade clause and will have a say in where he eventually lands. Besides the Capitals, the New York Islanders are also seemingly interested in the 27-year-old winger, according to the Hockey News’ Julian Gaudio.
