Capitals GM Reveals Protocol Alex Ovechkin Followed With Hall of Fame After Beating Wayne Gretzky’s Record

Capitals GM Chris Patrick admits Alex Ovechkin's specific milestone memorabilia criteria forced a 'different set of rules.'

When Alex Ovechkin moved past Wayne Gretzky on the all-time goals list, several of his gear items were placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame. After the recent Jack Hughes puck controversy, Ovechkin’s memorabilia has also gained attention regarding how it was handled after the game. People are interested in knowing what happens to the items linked to such a milestone.

How Washington Capitals GM Chris Patrick Handled Alex Ovechkin’s Historic Goal Memorabilia

After Ovechkin scored goal No. 895 against the New York Islanders on April 6, 2025, the game paused for a ceremony that honored the achievement. Wayne Gretzky and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman took part in the presentation, continuing a long-standing tradition for record moments.

Before the game resumed after the on-ice ceremony, Ovechkin’s gear was immediately collected near the Washington Capitals’ bench. The Hockey Hall of Fame worked with the Capitals to collect items, including the puck, stick, and jersey used during the play. Some of it went to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and some items, like the stick and puck, were kept by Ovechkin.

Now, almost a year later, Capitals general manager Chris Patrick explained how the organization approached that process and how Ovechkin’s own preferences were part of the discussion. Speaking on “The Sheet with Jeff Marek” podcast, he said, “Yeah, again, these are conversations that I tend to stay away from, just because I think those people are more capable than me, and I think the memorabilia aspect to them is really important.

“But with Alex, there’s a whole different set of rules, because he has a set of criteria for what he wants to keep from his career, be it sticks that he scores goals with, pucks that he scores goals with.”

Patrick also described how the team tracked every item during the run to the record and after it was achieved. “So there was some negotiation and back and forth for all those goals leading up to it, but it was very buttoned up and very well tracked.

“The pucks, the sticks, the gloves, our equipment staff did a great job of kind of on the fly tagging and barcoding everything as things happened, so that we at least knew what the original equipment was and then figured out who it is supposed to go to, at what time, and who has the rights to it based on everything we’ve talked about.”

Patrick added that this tracking system remains in place as Ovechkin continues to add to his total. The team keeps detailed records to ensure every item is properly assigned and accounted for. This approach helps maintain clarity around important pieces tied to his career.

Ovechkin has now touched 922 career goals as of March 2026 and continues to add to his record. While the milestone itself stands as a major achievement, the way it is managed off the ice shows how carefully such moments are handled.
