The Vancouver Canucks have struggled with transparency regarding their starting goaltender. Thatcher Demko has been absent from the lineup since Monday’s game against Nashville. The franchise initially described his absence as routine maintenance.
However, fans aren’t buying the official explanation. The circumstances surrounding Demko’s situation have raised serious questions about whether the organization is being honest about his injury status.
Why Are Canucks Fans Questioning the Team’s Story About Thatcher Demko?
The controversy began Friday when Vancouver recalled goaltender Jiri Patera from Abbotsford under emergency conditions. That specific designation created immediate skepticism among supporters.
According to CBA rules, emergency recalls are only permitted when a team cannot dress the league minimum of two goaltenders due to incapacitating injury or illness. A player sitting out for maintenance doesn’t meet those conditions.
The emergency recall mechanism exists for actual injuries, not rest days. Demko skated Friday morning but did so separately from his teammates. He then couldn’t dress for Saturday’s game against Columbus or Sunday’s contest against Colorado.
If this truly was maintenance, why use an emergency recall before confirming an actual injury? The contradiction between the team’s messaging and the roster move sparked immediate backlash on social media.
“Turns out Demko needed multiple maintenance days. Skated Friday but couldn’t dress Saturday/Sunday. Emergency recall was used before there was an actual injury involved. Just be honest and say he’s injured; stop trying to dance around the truth,” one frustrated fan posted.
Another supporter highlighted the issue more bluntly. “Normally, my favorite thing about a Thatcher Demko injury is that Demko is injured, but THIS time my favorite thing is that the Canucks felt the need to lie to fans and the media about it.”
The skepticism stems partly from Demko’s extensive injury history. The 29-year-old netminder battled three separate injuries last season, appearing in just 18 games. He hasn’t played a full season since 2021-22, when he suited up for 64 contests.
A groin issue cost him three months during the 2022-23 campaign. Meanwhile, another fan was visibly frustrated that Demko was hurt again. They posted, “HURT AGAIN??? So no announcement, but I’m predicting Thatcher Demko is HURT AGAIN.”
The fan continued, “He did not practice today, nor did Thatcher play the last game, nor is he playing tomorrow or Sunday. Kevin Lankinen is supposed to play tomorrow, so that will be back-to-back for him. Sunday is Jiri Patera???”
Head coach Adam Foote attempted damage control Saturday. “He won’t be playing tonight. He won’t be backing up tonight, but he went out this morning, and he’s still doing his thing, preparing for the next time he plays,” Foote said.
The coach emphasized that Vancouver asked Demko to prioritize his health during the summer, given the condensed Olympic schedule. However, that explanation doesn’t address why the franchise used emergency recall language if this was planned maintenance.
Fans remain unconvinced by the official narrative. The disconnect between the team’s words and actions suggests Demko is dealing with something more serious than routine rest. Whether Vancouver eventually admits the full truth remains to be seen.
