‘Thought This Was a Joke’ – Bruins Fans in Disbelief After GM Don Sweeney’s Contract Extension

The Boston Bruins failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, and what appeared to be a teardown of the team commenced at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline.

Gone were the likes of popular captain and longtime franchise mainstay Brad Marchand, along with Brandon Carlo, Trent Frederic, and Charlie Coyle.

But the latest move from the Bruins has been announced today, and fans aren’t happy about it. General manager Don Sweeney has been extended, causing an uproar amongst Bruins faithful on social media.

Bruins Fans Angered After Stunning Contract Extension

The decision to extend Sweeney is not going over well with Bruins fans.

This fan recapped some of his questionable moves, saying, “Traded for the worst goalie contract in the league Drafted a guy who couldn’t even score a goal in college Grossly overpaid for Zadorov and Lindholm Blew up the team for draft capital that they won’t cash in on because of the bad contracts And yall extended him?🙄”

Another fan had a sarcastic reaction to the move, saying, “So more bad trades, bad contracts and failed cup runs? Sounds like a good time.”

Speaking of sarcasm, this fan said, “When you underachieve for years and have a chance to sign up for two more years of the same you have to do it.”

This fan wondered, “Ok what compromising pictures do Sweeney and Neely have of Jacobs. Someone needs to look into this.”

One fan is encouraging a financial boycott of the Bruins, saying, “The Bruins do not deserve your financial support. They stink and it starts at the top. Don Sweeney has done an AWFUL job.”

This fan said, “Such a bad move cause he sucks as gm. It shows that the owner Charlie Jacobs is too in love with him. Charlie Jacobs is delusional.”

Finally, this fan said, “Opposing teams literally celebrating this is all you need to know. Bruins ownership needs to be arrested for malpractice.”

Bruins President Cam Neely Fully Endorses Don Sweeney

Bruins President Cam Neely released the following statement after Sweeney’s extension became official:

“Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision toward the future of the Boston Bruins,” said Neely. “He made difficult decisions around the trade deadline with the confidence they will pay dividends as we craft a path back to contention.

“I am confident in the plan he has followed these past few months – and excited for what’s to come for our team. The expectations in Boston have always been clear. It’s about winning championships.”

Despite Neely’s confidence, a quick glance at Bruins social media platforms indicate that the fans by in large have a separate view of Neely’s body of work with the franchise.
