Auston Matthews is still an essential part of Toronto’s plans, but recent events have led to some early discussion about his future. His injury and the team’s form have opened the door for outside speculation. There is no confirmation of any move, but his name has come up in trade talk.
Why Michael Russo Doubts the Minnesota Wild Can Trade for Auston Matthews
Auston Matthews is under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs through the 2027-28 season and holds a full no-movement clause. This option gives him full control over any trade decision.
Matthews’ 2025-26 season ended after a Grade 3 MCL tear in his left knee on March 12 against Anaheim, followed by surgery on March 19. Toronto expects him to return for the next training camp, but the situation has led to growing discussion about what could come next.

The Minnesota Wild have been mentioned in recent reports, largely due to general manager Bill Guerin’s past connection with Matthews. However, NHL insider Michael Russo explained why a move is unlikely at this point when speaking on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.
Russo said, “Well, I mean, I wouldn’t say that I’m hearing noise, but I know Bill Guerin really well, and there’s no doubt that he would be in on that if Auston ever went to market again.” He made it clear that interest would be there if the situation changed, but he also pointed to the challenges involved.
He said, “I just don’t know if the Wild would have the assets to get that done,” noting that recent high-profile trades have set a high price for players of this level. Minnesota has already used several key pieces in earlier deals, which limits what they can offer now.
Russo added, “They just don’t have those assets anymore,” referring to the Wild’s earlier move to acquire Quinn Hughes, which included multiple top prospects and a first-round pick. That deal improved their roster but reduced their ability to pursue another major trade.
He also explained that if Matthews ever became available, many teams would be involved. Russo said, “If Auston Matthews suddenly became available on the trade market, I think there’d be a lot of teams in it.” That type of market would make it even harder for one team to stand out.

Russo further said, “Unless Auston said, I’m only going to Minnesota, which, you know, I know Toronto fans don’t want to hear, I just don’t see how the Wild have those assets.”
Minnesota has shown interest in adding a top center and explored options at the trade deadline, but a move for Matthews would require more than what they currently have. For now, the situation depends on Toronto’s direction and whether Matthews ever becomes available.
