Auston Matthews Puts Cards on the Table Over Hope of Maple Leafs Rebounding From Season From Hell

Toronto’s playoff hopes are lost, yet Auston Matthews believes the Maple Leafs can quickly rebound from a tough season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are going through a difficult season, and the struggles have already forced the team to take a different approach at the trade deadline. For the first time in nearly a decade, Toronto acted as a seller, moving several players in exchange for draft picks as the organization looks to regroup for the future.

Now, Captain Auston Matthews has shared his thoughts on whether Toronto can bounce back from what has been a frustrating season.

Can the Toronto Maple Leafs Rebound From a Difficult Season?

The Maple Leafs currently sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division and have lost seven straight games. With the team now 11 points back of the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. Projections from The Athletic estimate Toronto’s chances of reaching the postseason at around 1%, making it increasingly likely that the season will end in disappointment.

Still, the bigger question now is what comes next and whether the Maple Leafs can bounce back quickly and return to contender status.

Matthews pointed to examples around the league that show how quickly things can change. “I remember Lightning missed the playoffs one year (16-17) & then the next year they’re back at the top of the division, competing. Boston this year, had a down (last) year & same thing, like, they’re in the mix. You know, sometimes it happens,” Matthews said.

Despite the difficult year, Matthews remains optimistic that the team can bounce back.

Head coach Craig Berube echoed that belief and expressed confidence in the group’s core. “We do have a good core. I think we have a lot of good players here. I do believe in all of these guys… It has just been a down year,” Berube said.

Forward Matthew Knies also supported Matthews’ outlook. “I think we’ll be back & stronger than ever,” Knies said.

Despite the challenging season, Toronto still intends to build around its core players, including Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, and Matthew Knies. Instead of entering a full rebuild, the organization gathered draft assets for retooling the roster around its established stars.

As the season nears its end, the focus will soon shift to the offseason, when the Maple Leafs can make further roster changes as they look to bounce back next year.

For now, the Maple Leafs will next face the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
