Alex Ovechkin Explains Why He Waved Off Sidney Crosby’s Penguins’ Handshake Gesture

Alex Ovechkin explains waving off a postgame handshake with Sidney Crosby because he hasn't decided on his retirement yet.

The rivalry between Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby delivered another memorable moment Sunday, but this time, it wasn’t just about what happened on the ice. After the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0, Ovechkin’s refusal to shake hands after the game sparked fresh retirement speculation across the hockey world.

Alex Ovechkin Explains His Decision to Wave Off Postgame Handshake

With uncertainty surrounding whether this could be Ovechkin’s final appearance in Pittsburgh, the crowd acknowledged the longtime rival during a second-period break. The arena announcer honored him, prompting a standing ovation from the home fans.

“Ovi, thank you for 21 years of the greatest rivalry in hockey. It has been a pleasure,” the announcer said. “And if you want, we’re ready to go for 22.” It was one of several tributes he has received in recent games.

After the final horn, Crosby and several Penguins players remained on the ice, appearing ready to share a handshake with Ovechkin. However, the Capitals captain waved them off and directed his team toward the locker room, which quickly fueled speculation about whether he plans to return next season.

Ovechkin later clarified that the decision wasn’t meant to signal anything definitive. He explained, “Because I haven’t decided yet. Thanks to them, to wait up there, but I’m going to see Sid right now, after the interview, and Geno.”

He has previously stated that any retirement decision will come during the offseason.

Despite waving off the public handshake, Ovechkin still shared a personal moment afterward. He exchanged signed jerseys and sticks with Crosby and Malkin and even brought his kids onto the ice for photos, underscoring the respect between the longtime rivals.

Washington Capitals Stay in the NHL Playoff Hunt

The game itself saw Washington deliver a strong performance. Trevor van Riemsdyk opened the scoring midway through the second period by jamming home a rebound. Connor McMichael doubled the lead in the third after a setup from Ryan Leonard. Then added an empty-net goal off a pass from Ovechkin to seal the win.

Ovechkin praised the team effort afterward, emphasizing the importance of collecting points down the stretch. “We need to collect the points and obviously tonight was a huge win. You can see everybody played hard. Everybody worked for the team and it was a great team success,” Ovechkin said.

The victory kept the Capitals’ postseason hopes alive, as they sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division with 93 points, just one point behind the Philadelphia Flyers, who still have two games remaining.

For Washington to qualify, they must win their final game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, while the Flyers need to lose both of their remaining games.
