The Chicago Bears are dealing with an unexpected offseason development. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that center Drew Dalman has informed the team he is retiring from the NFL at just 27 years old. As the news broke, the NFL world reacted to Dalman’s surprise decision and its ripple effects for Chicago.
Shockwaves Across the League After Dalman Walks Away
Schefter reported that Bears Pro Bowler Drew Dalman made the surprise retirement decision after five NFL seasons, including one in Chicago following four years with the Atlanta Falcons. Dalman, who was still under contract, leaves the Bears with a significant void in the middle of their offensive line.
NFL writer David Lombardi reacted immediately to the news. He mentioned Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum as a possible replacement. “Wow. Add another team to the Linderbaum sweepstakes,” Lombardi wrote.
Spotrac pointed to the financial impact tied to Dalman’s decision. “Drew Dalman has 2 years, $24M remaining on his contract, including $9.5M fully guaranteed in 2026,” the account posted.

Former NFL offensive lineman Damien Woody was simply shocked. He did not add much more than his disbelief. “Oh wow. Now that’s a blow,” Woody wrote.
Schefter later expanded on the roster implications for Chicago. “The Bears put a big focus on their interior OL last offseason, trading for Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney and signing Drew Dalman,” Schefter wrote. “They now have to address center again while also figuring out their LT spot after Ozzy Trapilo ruptured his patellar tendon in the playoffs.”
ESPN’s Field Yates highlighted just how strong Chicago’s interior unit had been. It was a unit that helped push the Bears to a division title. “Hard to overstate how great the Bears’ interior OL was in 2025. Dalman was incredible for them. A notable hole to fill now,” Yates wrote.
NFL insider Albert Breer connected the retirement to possible movement at the position league-wide, also mentioning Linderbaum. “The Bears have sniffed around Tyler Linderbaum, and now that makes sense,” Breer posted.
Former quarterback Chase Daniel captured fans’ emotional response. “Absolute shocker for Bears fans…,” Daniel wrote. “Bears went all in last offseason, solidifying the middle 3 guys of the OL and now have to start over at the most important position up front. Caleb Williams development is key here…will he take on more at the LOS??”

Fox Sports Radio’s Carmen Vitali offered a personal perspective on Drew Dalman’s retirement decision.
“Drew’s dad was a player and a coach. He’s seen first-hand life after football and the effects the game can have,” Vitali wrote. “If anyone is going to make an informed decision on when it’s time to hang ‘em up, it’s Drew. Happy for him. Sad for the Bears.”
The shocking development comes less than three months after Chicago finished the 2025 season with one of the league’s most efficient offensive fronts. The Bears ranked second in PFSN’s Team OL Impact Metric, and Dalman played a central role in that success.
