NFL World Reacts to Patriots’ $80M Splash on Romeo Doubs in Free Agency: ‘Looks Like A.J. Brown Is Staying’

Analysts praise Romeo Doubs' $80M Patriots deal as the ideal fit for Drake Maye after Stefon Diggs' release.

Four-year pro Romeo Doubs is on his way out of Green Bay, joining the New England Patriots on a four-year, $80 million deal.

Last week, the Patriots informed Stefon Diggs he would be released after just one season. The veteran was a key piece in accelerating New England’s rebuild, helping the club get back to the Super Bowl, where they fell to Seattle.

Doubs enters as an inevitable replacement for Diggs, potentially stunting the opportunity for A.J. Brown to join. Brown was highly rumored to reunite with head coach Mike Vrabel after their time together in Tennessee.

Social Media Erupts With Mixed Opinions Following Romeo Doubs’ Patriots Signing

Doubs, originally a fourth-round pick in 2022, will join a new club for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old has elevated his game each season, most recently tallying 724 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 55 receptions.

Using PFSN’s WR Impact metric, Doubs ranks 29th among eligible wideouts in 2025-26. At a 77.9 impact score and C+ grade, the receiver’s six touchdowns place him in the top 20 in that statistic.

As the 6-foot-2 receiver joins New England, one X user believes that seals Brown’s fate in Philadelphia.

“Looks like A.J. Brown is staying in Philadelphia,” one NFL fan wrote. Beyond the connection with Vrabel, Brown hinted at joining the Patriots several times this offseason.

This includes the Ole Miss product’s appearance on the “Dudes on Dudes” podcast, where former Patriots Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski campaigned for his services, to which Brown responded with a wink.

Regardless of New England’s interest, or lack thereof, in Brown, one Patriots reporter says there was immediate interest in Doubs.

“According to multiple sources, the Patriots showed interest in Doubs’ services as soon as the NFL’s legal tampering period opened on Monday at noon,” Mark Daniels said. “Those talks continued today. Now, it’s done. A new weapon for Drake Maye.”

Another New England writer and reporter, Alex Barth, poked fun at the signing.

“Get your Guardian Caps ready,” Barth wrote.

Fellow Patriots reporter Taylor Kyles believes Doubs was the ideal addition for New England’s offense.

“The #Patriots get the best WR left on the market,” Kyles said. “Mentioned earlier today that Doubs is a high-end WR2, and playing with Drake Maye and Josh McDaniels could make him a low-tier WR1 for their offense.”

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky is also in favor of the move, expressing his approval via an X post. “Love this for NE,” he wrote.

Building on the love for the deal, ESPN’s Mina Kimes describes why Doubs fits appropriately in New England’s system.

“Really like Romeo Doubs in New England,” Kimes said. “Polished route runner, red zone upside, can work the middle, and a good intermediate answer for Drake Maye — ranked 12th league-wide in yds/route run on 10-20 yd throws, tied with….Stefon Diggs. Could see him used in a similar fashion.”

Eli Berkovits, a Green Bay media presence, joined the conversation to discuss the deal’s value.

“Romeo Doubs is headed to New England and making a lot of money in the process,” Berkovits said. “Feels like this should net the #Packers a 4th round comp pick.”

Another team rumored to be interested in a receiver, specifically Doubs, was the Washington Commanders. Washington now must look elsewhere for a pass catcher.

The narrowing market for Washington was touched on by Commanders insider JP Finlay, who said, “Free agent WR pool keeps shrinking for Commanders.” Will Doubs prove to be the correct piece to propel New England to glory once again?
