‘I LIKE THIS’ — NFL World Reacts As Packers Claim WR Brenden Rice, Son of Jerry Rice, Off Waivers

The Packers claimed WR Brenden Rice off of waivers, and the NFL world had plenty of reactions to the son of Jerry Rice joining Green Bay.

Wide receiver Brenden Rice, son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, is making headlines of his own this offseason.

Brenden has bounced around the NFL as a journeyman receiver since being a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, perhaps Brenden’s latest move could change that.

Brenden Rice Draws Plenty of Support After Signing With Packers

After being drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers with the No. 225 overall pick in 2024, Rice has bounced around to the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders, and now the Packers.

Green Bay claimed Rice off of waivers on Wednesday, which prompted plenty of reactions from NFL observers.

“The Packers have claimed WR Brenden Rice off waivers after the Raiders released him earlier this week,” Preme Football tweeted. “Rice, the son of Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice, was originally selected by the Chargers with the 225th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After spending time with the Chargers, Patriots, and Raiders, along with workouts for the Browns, Eagles, and Titans during the 2025 season, Rice now heads to Green Bay.”

The NFL community was largely pleased with the move, as many want to see him succeed.

“A new WR for Green Bay,” Packers writer Andy Herman posted. “The Packers will need to make a corresponding move as their roster is full.”

“I liked Rice a lot coming out and was surprised he didn’t get picked til the 7th round,” Packers journalist Mark Oldacres wrote. “More competition for a potential last WR spot with Sturdivant etc.”

In the 2024 NFL Draft, Rice was the 32nd wide receiver selected in a class that also featured Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Ladd McConkey among others.

“OUUUUU I LIKE THIS, I wanted him in the draft,” one user tweeted.

“Brenden Rice is a Packer… Son of legendary NFL WR @JerryRice,” writer Arrick Upton added.

The wideout has struggled to find his rhythm in the pros, having been with five teams already despite only being in the league for two years. He has yet to log any stats, having appeared in only three NFL games with the Chargers and receiving limited snaps.

The third-year receiver enters a Packers’ wide receiver room that features Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, Bo Melton, and Skyy Moore, among others. Moreover, their passing game also features one of the league’s most elite tight ends, Tucker Kraft, who recorded the NFL’s best TE Impact score (90.9) in 2025.
