Sometimes it feels like the San Francisco 49ers have just become synonymous with injuries. Every year, the Niners suffer a laundry list of injuries, ruling key players out for extended stretches. That happened with George Kittle after he sustained an Achilles tear in January 2026.
Reporters delivered an update on Kittle this week, but considering the 49ers have already been bitten hard by the injury bug, the update is being greeted with caution.
49ers Fans ‘Scared’ By George Kittle’s Pending Return From Injury
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, Kittle spent part of Wednesday in Los Angeles visiting Dr. Neal ElAttrache. It’s the same doc who performed Kittle’s Achilles surgery in January.
Although the visit was “encouraging,” some fans reacted with doubt.
NFL Network fantasy football analyst Michael F. Florio admitted the Kittle injury “scares” him. Kittle’s recovery is reportedly “ahead of schedule,” and there’s now hope that he can play in the season opener.
David Lombardi of the “SF Standard” called it “great news” for the team. JP Acosta of CBS Sports had a unique reaction, crediting “sport science” on this one.
“Sport science turning a torn ACL or Achilles into basically a high ankle sprain is crazy.”

Another commenter urged the 49ers “not to play Kittle in Australia” for the season opener, presumably to make sure he doesn’t get rushed back too soon.
That’s great to hear! Don’t play him in Australia…. https://t.co/uxPOKshPt9

Yet, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport saw the update like many others, calling it “promising.”
Another just saw the news and said, “GOD BLESS.”
Meanwhile, a 49ers podcaster indicated they were expecting a Kittle return to take place in Week 3, when San Francisco faces the Arizona Cardinals.

At this point, if Kittle were magically available in Week 1, it would come as a pleasant surprise. With the 49ers already nursing several injuries, they can use all the help they can get, especially when it comes to pass-catchers.
The 32-year-old is headed into his 10th NFL season. Even though his season was done after just 11 games, Kittle was highly productive, recording 57 receptions, 628 yards, and seven touchdowns.
He ranked second in PFN’s Impact Score among tight ends last season with an 82.6 grade. Only Arizona’s Trey McBride was ahead of him. If Kittle can return to being even close to the player he was before the injury, the 49ers’ offense will get much more dangerous than it is right now.
