49ers GM John Lynch Weighs In on Fred Warner Possible Return This Season

Fred Warner’s season ending injury still leaves a faint question lingering over the 49ers playoff hopes and what a surprise return could mean.

Fred Warner has been a symbol of leadership and toughness for the San Francisco 49ers for many years. It is no surprise that John Lynch made him the highest paid linebacker in the NFL and secured him under contract for six more seasons before this year began, showing the level of trust he has in the 49ers star.

In what was shaping up to be one of his best seasons as a pro, the injury he suffered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6 cut his year short and left San Francisco’s defense without its top player. But there is still a small hint of hope that a return could happen in the playoffs.

Fred Warner Could Potentially Return For a Playoff Run

Few players represent a franchise as well as Warner has represented the 49ers. Present in every major moment for the team in recent years, in the Super Bowl 54 and 58 losses, and in the two conference championship games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams, he endured all the pain alongside the fans.

So when Warner went to the ground and did not get back up against the Buccaneers, early in the game, it felt as if part of the fanbase had fallen with him. The player who most embodies the franchise would not be with the team for the rest of the campaign in a year where dreaming about a title became possible despite being unlikely before.

Therefore, it is natural that there is a thread of hope that Warner might return at some point if San Francisco goes deep into the playoffs, and maybe even reaches the Super Bowl, which will be played at Levi’s Stadium. Lynch spoke about that possibility on 49ers Talk with NBC Sports.

“Well, medically, no,” Lynch said at first. “I mean, the docs say it’s probably on the wrong side of the range that they would suggest. But even the docs with Fred say, ‘You know what, let him rehab as if he’s coming back for something and we’ll see where he’s at.’”

Considering Warner’s effort on the field and the fact that he has played through fractures and has missed only one game in his entire career before 2025, a return even without being at 100 percent would already be welcome for the 49ers. His presence on the field changes the defense, and it is something San Francisco will have to consider.

“We’ll follow the orders of the doctors. They’ll control this, but Fred is going to push the limits, and he is doing everything possible. He lives in a hyperbaric chamber for two, three hours a day. He’s here all the time. He’s unbelievable, this guy. It’s what made him who he is,” Lynch added.

Warner suffered a dislocation and fracture in his ankle and is already in the second phase of his recovery, going back to walking and moving without assistance, which was not the case before. Currently, Curtis Robinson is filling the mike role, replacing both Warner and Tatum Bethune, who also got injured but should return after the bye.

The 49ers are currently the seventh seed, with one more win than the Detroit Lions, who are 8-5. With a 90.4 percent playoff chance according to the PFSN Football Playoff Meter, the question will be how much it is worth the risk of bringing Warner back, and that is a problem for the Lynch of the future.
