NFL Insider predicts Vikings to be Buyers at Trade Deadline

Minnesota Vikings target defensive reinforcements before the trade deadline, focusing on cornerback help to boost their NFC playoff chase.

The Minnesota Vikings are turning their attention to the trade deadline with a focus on improving, not unloading. With the roster getting healthier and J.J. McCarthy returning under center, league insiders say the Vikings are exploring moves to strengthen the defense, particularly at cornerback, as they look to stay in the NFC playoff race.

Minnesota Vikings Positioned To Add Help at Cornerback or Edge As Trade Deadline Nears

The Vikings are among a small group of teams actively looking to add at cornerback before Tuesday’s deadline, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. It’s a market short on supply, which could force Minnesota to get creative if it wants to make a move.

The team’s interest comes as it regains key starters on both sides of the ball, including tackles Brian O’Neill and Christian Darrisaw and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel. With Jeff Okudah still sidelined by a concussion, depth in the secondary remains a clear need.

The front office has the flexibility to explore deals, but there is limited room to overspend. The Vikings’ 2026 draft cupboard includes first, second, and third-round selections, plus a projected third-round compensatory pick for losing Sam Darnold in free agency.

Beyond that, they hold picks in the fifth, sixth, and three seventh-round slots, acquired through smaller trades involving Sam Howell, Mekhi Blackmon, Cam Akers, and Adam Thielen. With limited high-value capital, any trade would likely target a short-term veteran rather than a blockbuster acquisition.

According to Breer, expectations are that Minnesota will remain active but measured. The front office is expected to explore opportunities, gauge prices, and assess potential fits at cornerback and possibly edge rusher without forcing a deal that compromises long-term flexibility.

The sense around the organization is that the Vikings want to improve the roster while staying disciplined with their draft capital, open to upgrades, but only if the value and timing make sense.

Minnesota’s defense under Brian Flores has been aggressive and opportunistic, but inconsistent in coverage. An added veteran corner could give the group needed balance while preserving Flores’ pressure-heavy identity. With the team sitting at 3-4 and climbing back toward .500, the timing aligns with Kevin O’Connell’s message all week: This roster is ready to compete now. Minnesota ranks 8th in PFSN’s DEFi.

As the deadline approaches, Minnesota wants to strengthen the roster and make moves that reflect a team still intent on chasing wins, not selling them.
