Could Brian Thomas Jr. Actually Get Traded by the Jaguars? Breaking Down the Rumors

Breaking down the rumors of Brian Thomas Jr.'s trade availability, what's been said around the organization, and if a move could be on the horizon.

Brian Thomas Jr. entered his second NFL season carrying enormous expectations. As a rookie in 2024, he finished third in the league in receiving yards and broke multiple Jaguars franchise records. He tied the team’s rookie reception record and broke the franchise rookie record for receiving yards and touchdowns. It was the type of debut that typically cements a young receiver as a long term building block.

This year has been different. Through the first half of the season, Thomas has struggled in Liam Coen’s new offensive system and currently leads the league in drops. The production that made him one of the most promising young receivers in football has been replaced with inconsistency, inefficient play, and stalled drives. The drop off has been noticeable enough that his name unexpectedly entered trade discussions.

How the Rumors Started

The noise began when Dianna Russini reported that the Jaguars were actively shopping Thomas and that the former first round pick was available for trade. The report spread quickly, and fans across the league began speculating about potential landing spots, blockbuster packages, and whether Jacksonville might cash in while Thomas still carried high perceived value from his rookie season.

When asked about the idea of moving Thomas, Coen shut it down immediately. He said, “You know, we have no plans on moving Brian Thomas Jr. at all. Saw something about that over the weekend…I got a lot of confidence in him I really do believe that we can turn the corner and get better in the pass game”. While no coach would openly admit to exploring trade calls, Coen’s tone and direct response made it appear that Jacksonville truly had no desire to move him.

Even so, the rumors persisted because Thomas’ performance has declined significantly this season with Trevor Lawrence in Coen’s system, and the Jaguars’ offense has struggled to find consistency in the passing game. That combination has made the speculation difficult to ignore.

A Slow Start That Sparked Concern

Thomas has been underwhelming throughout the first half of the season, especially over the middle of the field, where drops have been particularly costly. He has 27 catches on 55 targets, and despite leading the team in targets by a margin of ten over rookie Travis Hunter, he has not turned that volume into reliable production. Hunter has more catches with 28 on just 45 targets and has been more efficient in nearly every phase.

According to PFSN’s WR Impact Rankings, Thomas sits at 63rd in the league with a grade of 67.3. That is behind both Dyami Brown and Hunter, who are ranked 60 and 61, and Parker Washington isn’t far behind at 68. The numbers underline how inconsistent Thomas has been and how often his mistakes have stalled drives or taken touchdowns off the board. The issues are not tied to Lawrence either; they are simple concentration lapses, effort problems, or miscues in tight spaces.

Still, Thomas has come through in key moments. He delivered a crucial late catch against Houston that set up the game-winning drive, and he secured a massive third-down reception on Monday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs during the final possession, allowing the Jaguars to win the game with the “Slip Six”. Brian’s talent is still there, and those flashes remind the Jaguars why patience may prove worthwhile.

How the Jaguars View Thomas

The Jaguars staff has shown full confidence publicly. When asked about Thomas’ slow start, Coen said, “Any player that has maybe not done as much as they would want to, all you know as a player and as a coach is to just keep pushing through. There is going to be a breakthrough at some point.” That stance has been consistent from the team all season.

Thomas remains confident as well. He said, “High as always. I feel like I know what I could do. I know what I am capable of, so my confidence is always high.”

Trevor Lawrence echoed the sentiment, saying, “I have all the confidence that he is going to play really well and be just fine.”

The message from the locker room and coaching staff has been clear. They believe Thomas is simply working through a slump and still view him as an integral part of the offense and franchise long-term.

Would the Jaguars Actually Trade Him?

While the organization continues to praise Thomas and deny any interest in a trade, the realistic answer is that a move would only occur if a team presented Jacksonville with an offer too strong to ignore. For a 23-year-old wide receiver with elite physical tools and a rookie season that ranked him as the fourth-best receiver in the league on PFSN’s Impact Rankings in 2024, the price would be extremely high.

Any serious offer would need to include at least a first-round pick and an additional day-two selection. Even then, the Jaguars may still prefer to hold onto Thomas rather than ship away a player with star potential who is under contract and aligns with their long-term core timeline.

Jacksonville knows the talent Thomas displayed last season does not simply vanish. His product on the field this year is far from ideal, but the film still shows a receiver capable of snapping out of his slump if he cleans up the drops and finds rhythm within Coen’s scheme. Trading him now would mean giving up on a young superstar player who has already shown the ability to be a top weapon in the league.

The Bottom Line

Thomas is still the Jaguars’ top target, still a major piece of the passing game, and still a young player with enormous upside. The rumors created national attention and sparked intense debate, but the organization has stood behind him at every turn.

If a trade ever happens, it will be because a team overwhelmed Jacksonville with an offer they couldn’t refuse. My takeaway, though, is that Thomas is not going anywhere anytime soon. The Jaguars are committed to helping Thomas rediscover the version of himself that dominated as a rookie.

Now it is up to Thomas to quiet the conversation on the field and let his play determine the narrative the rest of the way.
